Box Office Triumph: ‘Melania’ Doc Smashes Predictions, Heads To $8M+ Opening Weekend
Hollywood insiders expected “Melania,” the new documentary about First Lady Melania Trump, to flop. But the film has smashed projections and is now on track to earn over $8 million in its opening weekend. Much of that success is being driven by older female audiences, especially in Southern and South-central states.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, nearly 75 percent of opening weekend viewers were women aged 55 and older. Despite a media campaign filled with images of empty theaters, turnout far exceeded expectations. The film’s audience score has also stunned critics, with a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade from Cinemascore.
The documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at the 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, focusing on Melania’s transition from private citizen to First Lady. It’s directed by Brett Ratner, the filmmaker behind the “Rush Hour” series.
Amazon MGM, which paid $40 million for the licensing rights and another $35 million on marketing, appears to have underestimated the film’s grassroots appeal. Legacy media outlets panned the film, handing it a dismal 11% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But audiences have embraced it.
“An inside look at inaugural preparations, done in style,” one reviewer wrote. “Also getting to know our First Lady in a more personal way. The lady who is smart, elegant, stylish, beautiful, and someone who loves this country.”
Another added, “Wow. Thought I may like it for the fashion take on it. But it was so much more. Absolutely loved it. Regardless if you like her or not — this documentary was really, really good.”
Melania Trump addressed the film’s impact at its premiere in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. Speaking to CNN, she said, “I’m very proud of the film, so people may like it, may not like it, and that’s their choice.”
“For myself, it’s already successful,” she continued. “I’m very proud of what we did.”
The First Lady had earlier described the film as a “first of its kind” during her Fox Nation “Patriot of the Year” award speech. She said it captured the intensity and transformation of those 20 days before the inauguration — balancing family, philanthropy, and White House staffing decisions.
“Melania” is now playing in theaters across the country.
