Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Strikes Against Federal Interference

On Saturday, Brandon Johnson, the Mayor of Chicago, enacted an executive order with the aim of mitigating the influence of federal law enforcement and National Guard soldiers, an intention purportedly hinted by President Donald Trump to be enforced in Illinois. ‘In order to safeguard our citizens from federal intrusion, we are compelled to take serious, urgent measures,’ expressed Johnson, a member of the Democratic party, during a press briefing.

Key among the elements of the order, according to Johnson, was a directive to the city’s legal department to employ all available legal avenues in order to nullify any upcoming plans by Trump. Additionally, Johnson highlighted the city’s commitment to using any available resources, including judicial ones, to counter the potential plans.

This represents an effort at preserving the system of checks and balances that exist in this country,’ he stated. The order also contains a variety of other instructions, as pointed out by Johnson, which clearly describes the actions that Chicago’s police are permitted to take in aid of federal law enforcement, and it prohibits them from hiding their faces or the police force’s emblem on their uniforms.

The order reinforces that the Chicago Police Department will not collaborate with the military pertaining to police surveillance or civil immigration enforcement. ‘We will not permit our hardworking police officers who strive each day to reduce crime be roped into performing traffic stops and checkpoints for the president’ Johnson affirmed during the press event.

These actions are in response to the president’s move to mobilize troops and federal law enforcement to the capital, with an increasing implication of a similar deployment in other major U.S. cities, such as Baltimore. Democratic officials have largely resisted Trump’s threats to station troops in American cities.

An illustrative example of this resistance is a joint statement by more than a dozen Democratic governors that was released on Thursday. They pointed out that, ‘The President’s threats and efforts to deploy a state’s National Guard without the request and consent of that state’s governor not only demonstrate a troubling misuse of power but also are ineffective and detract from the mission of our servicemen.’

The statement further urged, ‘This unsettling federal interference in our states’ National Guard must be brought to a halt.’ Meanwhile, earlier this week, Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington expressed her view that the federal escalation had reduced crime, but the appearance of immigration officers and National Guard soldiers was not effective.

According to Bowser’s statement to reporters last week, ‘We are aware that this approach is failing to bridge the gap of trust between law enforcement and communities, particularly with the introduction of new federal partners in our community. The presence of hidden ICE agents in the community and National Guards from other states has not proved to be an effective use of resources.’

Currently, there has been no formal declaration by Trump to dispatch federal law enforcement or National Guard soldiers to Chicago. However, The Washington Post published a report earlier this month suggesting that the Defense Department was deeply involved in strategizing a military deployment to the city.

In response to these developments, Johnson stated on Saturday that the city has ‘received plausible intelligence that it is a matter of days, not weeks, before federal militarized activity is seen in our cities’. He expressed uncertainty about what form this could take, suggesting possibilities from militarized immigration enforcement to National Guard troops to even the deployment of active-duty military and armed vehicles.

Saturday saw a response from White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson who accused Mayor Johnson of suffering from ‘Trump derangement syndrome.’ Jackson pointed out that ‘If Democrats focused more on solving crimes in their cities instead of staging publicity stunts to criticize the President, their communities would be much safer. The struggle against crime should not be a matter of partisan debate, but Democrats suffering from TDS are trying to make it one.’

In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, mentioned that the administration was considering action in Chicago. ‘Chicago, along with all other sanctuary cities, is in our sights,’ warned Homan. ‘President Trump is committed to targeting sanctuary cities, as these cites are where the major issues lie.’

He later indicated that local officials’ potential resistance would not serve as a hindrance, stating, ‘Step aside, because we will carry out our mandate.’ Earlier this month, Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops along with federal law enforcement officers to Washington D.C., citing a mission to fight crime.

So far, these National Guard troops and federal officials have strategically been placed within the Metropolitan Police Department across various areas of the nation’s capital. Prior to this, within the same year, Trump nationalized California’s National Guard, despite the disapproval from Governor Gavin Newsom, D-Calif. This resulted in troops being dispatched to Los Angeles to suppress protests against the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions.

Speaking at an event in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Vice President JD Vance referred to the president’s plans to dispatch troops to other American cities, assuring the audience that Trump would not ‘force’ the troops on unwilling governors and mayors. ‘The president has made it clear that we want leaders at the municipal and state level who request our help,’ Vance stated.

He later drew attention to the crime situation in Chicago in his speech, questioning, ‘Why are mayors and governors more infuriated about Donald Trump’s offers of assistance than about the fact that their own citizens are becoming victims of carjackings and murders in their streets? It is inexplicable.’
