China Invokes Resilience Against US Trade Confrontation

In the face of intensifying trade confrontation with the United States, China has called on its counterpart to work towards a mutual resolution. This came as an answer to the escalating commercial conflict that was prevalent during President Donald Trump’s initial tenure. Correspondingly, President Xi Jinping did not reference any additional tariffs in his remarks.

A message dated to April 9, 2025, announced that President Xi Jinping planned to impose 180% tariffs on American imports, taking effect the very next day. In an attached video of about a minute’s length, the Chinese leader expressed his views in his native Mandarin. He metaphorically depicted the Chinese economy in comparison to a vast ocean, contrasting it with a minor pond.

According to him, just as an ocean experiences periods of serenity followed by intense storms, so does the Chinese economy. Furthermore, he explained that while storms have the power to devastate small ponds, they are incapable of causing similar damage to a vast ocean. In the face of numerous storms, the ocean remains undeterred.

Xi also expressed the resiliency of the Chinese nation, stating, ‘After enduring over 5,000 years of difficulties, China persists. Gazing into the future, I can say with certainty, China will remain.’ This statement indicated his unwavering faith in the continuing presence of China, regardless of the obstacles it encounters.

Since President Trump orchestrated a dramatic global increase in tariffs on April 2, global financial markets have experienced tremendous fluctuation. This decision was then promptly halted for most nations, only a week later. However, tensions escalated as Trump further fueled the intense commerce war against China, a global powerhouse, by escalating tariffs to 125 percent.

In retaliation, China has counter struck with a staggering 84 percent tariff on American imports. This adjustment was implemented shortly after noon (0401 GMT) on April 10th. In regards to these actions, China’s commerce department has issued a warning about the negative impact of these tariffs on the global economy.

This admonishment emphasized how the implemented tariffs could ‘severely’ disrupt the global economic setup. China’s commerce ministry, however, highlighted that discussions are still open. They extended hope for the United States to cooperate with China with an intension to find a midway solution.

He Yongqian, the spokeswoman for the Commerce Ministry, voiced out on the same day, ‘We sincerely hope that the U.S will reciprocate our willingness to work together and resolve differences through dialogue and consultation, based on principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperative benefits.’ She echoed her country’s emphasis on reconciliation through conversation, pushing for mutual respect and the prospect of mutual benefits.

There have been instances where the content of Xi’s speech was presented as recent outpourings, shared through Thai and English posts. However, this video pertained to the year 2018. It showcased President Xi’s stance over the trade friction at the time, during Trump’s initial presidential term. This represents how the leader of China responded to the ongoing trade dispute.

The shared video clip inadvertently revealed that the content was delivered on November 5, 2018. This date situates the speech almost ten months into the prevailing trade conflict between these two major global economies, China and the United States. Importantly, President Xi does not indicate an escalation in tariffs against the U.S during the entirety of his address.

Instead of threatening further tariffs, Xi committed himself to opening up the Chinese economy even more. He conveyed the sentiment of holding individual countries accountable for their own challenges rather than shifting blame to others. In a subtle critique of President Trump’s stance, Xi expressed his opinions against ‘the law of the jungle’.

The Chinese leader articulated his opposition on opportunistic practices of isolating economies and directing accusations against other nations to blur their own internal issues. He remonstrated the rise of ‘protectionism’ and ‘isolationism’ within the global arena. This stance showcased Xi’s reiteration on mutually cooperative global economic practices.

President Xi instead called for mutual understanding, cooperation, and dialogue as opposed to focusing on individualistic interests and protectionist policies. He resonated the need for dialogue and discussion, instead of pointing fingers and propagating blame, which does not lead to any productive resolution.

Echoing the national sentiment, Xi promoted the motto of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing the importance of a collaboration that ultimately results in a win-win situation for both sides involved. Through this, he indirectly rebuked the Trump administration’s handling of the situation.

Through it all, the narrative that emerged was one of resilience, understanding and a call towards dialogue. Xi’s responses represented China’s resilience, its dedication to maintaining its stature despite difficulties, and its call for peaceful resolution through dialogue.
