Recent polling has alluded to a concerning trend for American patriotism, particularly among Democrats. The Gallup poll indicates that only a paltry 36% of Democrats claim to be ”extremely” or ”very” proud to be American. This shows a considerable downturn in national pride, with this feeling of discontent even more pronounced in the younger members of our society. These numbers paint a distressing picture of the dwindling sense of pride in being an American, which is particularly prominent in the Democratic population.
Statistical findings have demonstrated a tumultuous shift, where pride in the nation divides along party lines. The difference now rests at a record 56 percentage points between Democrats and Republicans, the widest it has been since 2001. This division survives even after enduring four years under Republican President Donald Trump. It’s apparent that the current Democratic leadership headed by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris was not successful in mending this divide.
Generational demographics further reveal the extent of the erosion of national pride. Only 4 out of 10 adults from Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, exude a high level of American pride. This is markedly less when compared to the 6 in 10 Millennials, or 7 in 10 individuals from older generations. It seems the Democratic leaders Biden and Harris have failed to ignite the flames of patriotism within younger Americans.
The decline in national pride has been slow yet steady, a disheartening trend recorded in Gallup’s data since the question of national pride was initiated in 2001. Even amidst volatile period such as the early years of the Iraq War, the majority of US adults, regardless of party, expressed extreme pride in their nation. At that time, close to 9 out of 10 individuals stated they were ‘extremely’ or ‘very’ proud to be American.
Post the attacks on September 11, 2001, the united feeling of American pride remained high although it began to taper off in subsequent years. By 2006, American pride shrank to about 8 in 10 and gradually segued into a continual decline. Now, only 58% of US adults echo this sentiment. Alarmingly, this descent in national pride has been chiefly driven by the political left, namely Democrats and independent voters.
The majority of Republicans, however, stand tall with an unyielding sense of pride in being American. On the other hand, the pride for independent voters has nosedived to an all-time low of 53%, further reinforcing the pattern of steady decline. The deterioration of pride among Democrats can be linked decidedly to Trump’s tenure in office, implying a strong distaste for opposition leadership.
Upon Trump’s initial arrival to the White House in 2017, about two-thirds of Democrats asserted their American pride. However, by 2020, this number trickled down to barely 42%, just as Trump was ousted by Democrat Joe Biden. Surprisingly, even with Biden and Kamala Harris taking the helm, the Democrats’ sense of national pride languished, failing to regain the peak experienced before Trump-era.
Other recent polling suggests a significant ideological gap between Democrats, Independents, and Republicans when it comes to expressing patriotism or a sense of pride in their national leaders. A stunning near 9 in 10 Republicans polled claimed that patriotism positively impacts the United States. Democrats, on the other hand, seemed mired in discord. While 45% believed patriotism had a positive effect, a sizable 37% viewed it as a negative attribute.
However, a more prevailing sense of dissatisfaction was discernible across the partisan divide earlier this year. A poll revealed that less than 1 out of 10 Republicans or Democrats claimed to be ‘proud’ of their current political climate in America. That poll demonstrated in stark relief that regardless of political leanings, the majority of Americans acknowledge their frustration and disappointment with the country’s political scene.
With the current Biden and Harris administration in office, the sense of national pride among their own followers, the Democrats, seems to have taken a hit. Perhaps, they are not being inspired or motivated enough by their own leaders. Their dissatisfaction not only mirrors a dissatisfaction with their leaders but suggests that their leadership may not be up to par.
The stark difference between Republicans and Democrats shows, rather emphatically, that the leaders of the two parties have distinctly different impacts on their followers. While Republicans appear to have instilled a high level of pride and patriotism, Democrats’ pride seems to have waned under Biden and Harris. This paints a picture of leadership failure for the Democrats during their time in office.
These poll results reinforce the narrative that Democrats, since the start of the Biden-Harris era, have been experiencing an identity crisis. Their lower pride score suggests either a disenchantment with national leadership or a fundamental shift in party ideology. Sadly, this growing sense of disillusionment is finding its echo among the young, the future of the country.
So, is there a solution to this national pride crisis among Democrats? There seems to be a correlation between political leadership and national pride. It’s clear that Biden and Harris have failed to pull Democrats out of their slump, unlike Trump, under whose leadership, Republicans maintained higher national pride numbers.
Based on these trends, Biden and Harris need to work harder than ever to rejuvenate their base. They need to articulate a clear vision that can inspire their voters to feel pride, show patriotism, and believe in America again. But the question remains, will they be successful given their lackluster start?
Whether it’s the Democrats finding their faith in the nation rekindled, or Republicans continuing their unwavering pride under any leadership, the underlying thread remains patriotism. But it remains to be seen how national pride evolves and if current Democratic leaders Biden and Harris can right their course in time.
The declining sense of national pride among Democrats and young generations should serve as an urgent alarm for present Democratic leaders. The continued lack of enthusiasm for their own leaders is a concern that Biden and Harris must address swiftly to regain the decreasing national sentiment of pride.
