Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia to Take On ‘Wokipedia’ and End Leftist Monopoly on Online Information

Elon Musk officially launched Grokipedia, a new AI-powered encyclopedia designed to challenge what he calls Wikipedia’s entrenched left-wing bias — or, as he’s nicknamed it, “Wokipedia.”

The site, built by Musk’s xAI team and named after its chatbot Grok, went live this week with nearly 900,000 articles already published. Its mission? To offer what Musk calls “a more honest, less manipulated” source of information — in stark contrast to Wikipedia, which dominates over 70% of AI queries and routinely tops Google results despite widespread criticism for left-wing editorial slants.

One of Grokipedia’s early examples: Instead of parroting Democrat talking points on Hunter Biden’s laptop, the article cites a 2023 Media Research Center poll that found 79% of Americans believed the laptop story’s suppression impacted the 2020 election outcome — a view shared by Republicans, independents, and even some Democrats.

Compare that to Wikipedia, which still calls the scandal a “false allegation” by Trump and blames “right-wing media” for trying to weaponize it.

On topics like COVID-19 origins, RFK Jr., and Donald Trump, Grokipedia offers balanced summaries and direct citations — while Wikipedia opens by calling RFK a “conspiracy theorist” and labels lab-leak concerns “conspiratorial.”

Musk’s AI encyclopedia has already won over critics of Wikipedia, with one user writing on X, “I will literally never use Wikipedia again. Grokipedia is clearly much more factual and unbiased.”

The launch triggered an immediate backlash. Wikipedia — in what many saw as a defensive move — slapped up its own article on Grokipedia, accusing the new site of promoting “right-wing perspectives,” “medical misinformation,” and censoring views Musk disagrees with.

Critics mocked the hit piece as proof that Wikipedia feels threatened. One user posted, “They’re terrified. And they should be.”

Grokipedia is built on generative AI instead of crowdsourced editors. Readers can flag text for errors directly, and early users have praised its transparency, readability, and willingness to cite sources across the spectrum, including conservative outlets routinely blacklisted by Wikipedia’s moderators.

Take The New York Post. Wikipedia describes it as a “conservative tabloid.” Grokipedia counters with: “A provocative tabloid known for its bold headlines, investigative reporting, and conservative-leaning commentary that challenges prevailing narratives.”

Musk’s own page is equally unfiltered. It describes him as an “innovative visionary with an irreverent provocateur’s spirit” — and even mentions his preference for “morning donuts and multiple Diet Cokes daily.”

Musk began working on Grokipedia after David Sacks, Trump’s AI and crypto czar, floated the idea on his podcast.

“Wikipedia has achieved a dominant position,” Sacks said. “But if they don’t stop blackballing conservative publications, someone has to build the alternative. And now Elon is.”

Musk has long criticized Wikipedia for enabling leftist narratives. In January, he urged users to stop donating to the site altogether after it edited his page to include an out-of-context reference to a hand gesture critics compared to a Nazi salute.

“Legacy media propaganda is treated as gospel by Wikipedia,” Musk said. “So of course the site becomes an extension of legacy media lies.”

While Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales is already dismissing Grokipedia as AI-driven junk, Larry Sanger, the other co-founder, has been more open — having criticized Wikipedia’s leftward drift for years. Sanger said Grokipedia could become something important, but also flagged several inaccuracies in its current coverage of himself.

Still, for many frustrated with the censorship and bias of Wikipedia, Grokipedia represents the first real shot at breaking its monopoly. And for Musk, it’s just the next step in his crusade to decentralize truth and dismantle the propaganda machine — one AI-generated article at a time.
