Facebook And Instagram Hit By Widespread Outage, Leaving Thousands Locked Out
Thousands of users reported problems accessing Facebook, Instagram and Messenger on Friday as Meta experienced a widespread outage affecting multiple platforms.
Reports surged on outage-tracking website Downdetector, where complaints about Instagram jumped from normal levels to several thousand within a short period of time. Users reported being unexpectedly logged out, unable to load apps, or unable to access their accounts.
Meta acknowledged the disruption shortly after complaints began flooding social media.
Andy Stone, Meta’s communications vice president, addressed the issue on X.
“We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it,” Stone wrote.
Many frustrated users turned to Downdetector and other social media platforms to share their experiences.
One user reported being greeted with a “blank page” when attempting to access Instagram, while another said they had been “logged out of my account out of nowhere” and could not sign back in.
The problems appeared to extend beyond Instagram.
Users across Facebook and Messenger reported similar issues, including being forcibly logged out and receiving error messages when attempting to reconnect.
“Anybody else just been logged out of Facebook messenger and can’t log back in? Unknown error,” one user wrote on X.
Another user posted: “Facebook down??? Got logged out and says query error.”
Some users reported losing access to both Facebook and Messenger simultaneously, leading many to speculate that the outage was affecting Meta’s broader infrastructure.
Several social media posts claimed the outage appeared to be global, though Meta had not yet provided details regarding the scope or cause of the disruption.
The company has not announced a timeline for a full restoration of service.
As engineers work to resolve the issue, users across the world continue reporting login failures, loading problems and account-access issues across Meta’s platforms.
