Federal Judges Oppose Trump Administration, Reversing Key Rulings

A series of federal judges persist against the Trump administration, reversing several decisions, including one to deport the family of Mohamed Soliman, who is currently facing hate crime accusations following a firebomb attack in Colorado. These judicial actions have emerged in response to Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary’s statement that President Trump experienced more injunctions in a single month of his tenure than Joe Biden did in three years. Leavitt also claimed that the real constitutional crisis is happening within the judiciary, as some district court judges in progressive districts are allegedly overreaching their roles to obstruct Trump’s basic executive powers.

There are several significant instances from last week where federal judges went against Trump administration orders. One high-profile case involves a postponement in the expulsion of Boulder attack suspect’s family, despite their violation of visa terms. This Wednesday, one federal judge in Colorado intervened to temporarily suspend the planned removal of Mohamed Soliman’s wife, Hayem El Gamal, along with their five children, all of whom are originally from Egypt.

The legal injunction on deporting Soliman’s family extends until the scheduled court hearing on June 13. This ruling provisionally bars federal immigration authorities from executing Soliman’s wife and their children’s removal from the country. According to insiders, despite the fact that El Gamal and her kids have overstayed their visas, Soliman has already filed an asylum application on their behalf.

Another example of recent pushback concerns the Trump administration’s treatment of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia’s case – a Salvadorian migrant. A federal judge approved a request to unseal specific records associated with his case. Simultaneously, a request by Abrego Garcia’s counsel for a motion to sanction the Trump administration was also granted.

The verdicts undoubtedly provide the plaintiffs a stronger hand, potentially serving as a new arsenal to seek repercussions if the administration’s officials were deliberatively non-compliant with court orders or acted in bad faith. The Supreme Court has earlier mandated the Trump administration to assist in Abrego Garcia’s repatriation to the United States.

A preliminary injunction against the Trump administration’s perceived threat to withdraw federal funding for transportation initiatives got the green light earlier this week. Denver, along with several other local governments, were the beneficiaries of the federal judge’s ruling which ruled Trump’s administration had likely breached the Separation of Powers doctrine, thereby causing harm through their intimidation to cut funding.

A recent order from a federal judge insisted that the Trump administration reinstate several millions in funding towards AmeriCorps and rehire thousands of employees. This decision came following the judge’s ruling that the measures taken by the administration were in breach of the federal law. The order also included a mandate to renew funding for the AmeriCorps initiatives.

Drastic measures to shutter Job Corps centers were also halted by the orders of a federal judge. These centres serve a valuable role for disadvantaged 16 to 24-year-olds by offering them a chance to secure diplomas or equivalent certifications, vocational documentation, and essential job training.

The attempt to close the Job Corps centers was temporarily restrained following an assertion from the Department of Labor. Stating that the program was not an efficient or effective use of resources, they highlighted concerns like inadequate job placement for participants, instances of violence, drug misuse, and security shortfalls at the facilities.

Another emblematic ruling against the Trump administration concerned a Mexican migrant seeking asylum. The federal judge decreed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should not remove a 24-year-old transgender woman who was recently transferred to an ICE Processing Center.

The final noteworthy judgement involved a university student and ICE. A federal judge blocked ICE from arresting the student following her participation in public protests. It seems that the federal judges remain assertive in pushing back against what they view as the Trump administration’s overreach.
