Florida Democratic Leader Found Dead As Husband Arrested In Domestic Violence Probe

Nancy Metayer Bowen, vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party and vice mayor of Coral Springs, was found dead in her home Wednesday morning in a case authorities are investigating as a possible domestic violence incident.

Police confirmed that her husband, Stephen Bowen, was taken into custody following the discovery. Officials have not yet released details about the exact cause of death, saying the investigation remains ongoing.

Metayer Bowen, 38, had been rising quickly in Florida politics and was reportedly preparing to launch a congressional campaign in the coming weeks. Her sudden death has sent shockwaves through the local political community.

A first-generation Haitian American, she built a career spanning public service, nonprofit leadership, and political organizing. She held degrees in public health and previously worked with federal agencies and national political offices before returning to Florida to serve in local government.

She was appointed vice mayor of Coral Springs in late 2024 and later took on a leadership role within the state Democratic Party, focusing on Haitian American voter engagement.

In addition to her public service work, Metayer Bowen had been active in national campaigns, including involvement in recent presidential election efforts targeting Caribbean voters in Florida.

Her family described her as a compassionate leader dedicated to serving others and bringing communities together. Tributes from colleagues and public officials have highlighted her impact and the promise many believed she carried for the future.

Jared Moskowitz said she had been on the verge of announcing a run for Congress, calling her a strong advocate for her community and expressing shock over the loss.

Authorities have not provided further information about the circumstances surrounding her death, and the case remains under active investigation.
