Florida Statehouse: The Epicenter of ‘Good Trouble Protest’

A congregation of demonstrators, primarily from progressive factions, carried out a protest outside the Florida Statehouse in Tallahassee this past Thursday. They dubbed their demonstration as the ‘Good Trouble Protest’, which coincided with similar events staged across the nation in commemoration of the late eminent civil rights advocate and renowned politician, John Lewis. His passing marked a significant loss on this very date in the preceding year.

The organizing activists put forth an urging call to the protest participants, pleading them to seriously contemplate the option of civil disobedience as a means to confront the contentious new immigration detention centers which have recently sprouted up across Florida. A key figure in the organization of this demonstration, Robert Lee, took the opportunity to mention Alligator Alcatraz. This particular center, nestled in the heart of the South Florida Everglades, indeed sparked much of the outrage.

In the midst of these demonstrative events, numerous individuals confined at Alligator Alcatraz have voiced extensive reports describing deplorable living conditions. Lee echoes their experiences, urging others to grasp the severity of the situation, stating, ‘It may be that some individuals will attempt to downplay or dismiss the reality. However, let’s be clear, this facility is nothing other than a concentration camp. We must not subscribe to euphemisms that disguise its true nature.’

Lee drew attention to a rumour that additional detention centers could potentially be constructed at places like Camp Blanding, located near Jacksonville, and potentially extending as far as the Panhandle region. His group is poised to coordinate bus rides geared towards demonstrating their dissent pertaining to these plans, but Lee also emphasized that civil disobedience isn’t the only vehicle for engagement.

Lee pointed out the necessity of auxiliary aid, remarking, ‘Support systems are integral in this struggle. We must establish bail funds. We need people prepared to sit vigil outside prisons, anticipating the release of those who have been apprehended.’

Contrary to activist concerns, Governor Ron DeSantis made a declaration on Wednesday, stating that the detention center at Camp Blanding will not commence operations until the Alligator Alcatraz facility in the Everglades reaches full capacity. The Governor has elected not to address the concerns dominating the discourse surrounding these detention centers.

Seeking to minimize concern, Governor DeSantis remarked, ‘We’re not positing these centers as luxury accommodations; this is far from the Ritz-Carlton. However, it’s crucial to understand that we don’t just provide survival necessities, and even though food and shelter are provided, the very minimum standards are assuredly being met.’
