Gavin Newsom Laughs Off Potential 2028 Showdown With Kamala Harris, Says ‘That’s Fate’

California Governor Gavin Newsom brushed aside speculation about a possible 2028 Democratic primary clash with former Vice President Kamala Harris, laughing off the scenario and saying that if it happens, it will be “fate.”

During an interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash, Newsom was asked how he would handle sharing a debate stage with Harris should both seek the Democratic nomination. Bash referenced Newsom’s recent memoir, noting the parallel paths their political careers have taken in California and on the national stage.

Before Bash could fully finish her question about their careers potentially colliding, Newsom began laughing. He initially joked about the geographic rivalry between San Francisco and Los Angeles before Bash clarified that she was referring to a national race in 2028.

“That’s — you know, fate will determine that,” Newsom said. He added that he has never stood in the way of Harris’ political ambitions and does not imagine doing so in the future.

When pressed again about the possibility of running directly against her for president, Newsom repeated that such an outcome would be up to fate. He said individuals can only control what is within their power and emphasized that he cannot control the decisions Harris may make.

Newsom is term limited and widely viewed as a potential Democratic contender in 2028. Harris, who previously served as vice president, is also frequently mentioned as a possible candidate, setting the stage for potential tensions within the party’s top ranks.
