Hoarder Parents Charged With Murder After 7-Year-Old Son Dies Weighing 255 Pounds

Michigan authorities have charged a Flint Township couple with murder after their 7-year-old son died from heart failure while weighing 255 pounds, in a case prosecutors described as involving shocking and prolonged neglect.

Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, are facing charges of second-degree murder, child abuse and torture following the death of their son, Casper O’Brien, in November 2025. Prosecutors allege the couple’s failure to provide proper medical care and supervision directly contributed to the boy’s death.

Police and emergency responders arrived at the family’s home after receiving a 911 call about a child in medical distress. Casper was transported to a local hospital but died shortly afterward.

According to medical findings, the child died from dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens the heart muscle and can lead to heart failure. Morbid obesity was listed as a contributing factor in his death.

At the time of his death, Casper stood 4 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 255 pounds. Health guidelines indicate that a healthy weight for a boy of his age and height would typically range between 50 and 73 pounds.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton described the case as one of extraordinary neglect, arguing that the circumstances amounted to willful and reckless conduct that supports the murder charge.

Investigators found that Casper had almost no contact with medical professionals throughout his life and had reportedly been taken to a doctor only once. Authorities noted that the family had health insurance coverage and that Casper’s father maintained stable employment.

Officials also highlighted that the family contacted a veterinarian for treatment of their dog on the same day their son suffered his fatal medical emergency.

The investigation further revealed that Casper’s 5-year-old sister was living in the home under similar conditions. Authorities described the residence as a hoarding environment and said neither child had attended school or been known to child welfare agencies.

According to prosecutors, Child Protective Services had never visited the home and there had been no prior reports involving the children.

The O’Briens are currently being held without bond at the Genesee County Jail and are scheduled to appear in court again on July 2 as the case moves forward.
