Ilhan Omar Claims ICE ‘Pulled Over’ Her Son, Admits He Carries Passport Everywhere
Rep. Ilhan Omar is once again playing the victim card — this time dragging her own son into the narrative. During a Sunday interview with a local Minnesota outlet, the Democrat lawmaker claimed her son was “pulled over” by ICE agents and only released after producing a U.S. passport to prove his identity.
According to Omar, the incident happened after her son stopped at a Target store. She said ICE agents questioned him and let him go once he confirmed who he was. Rather than expressing relief that law enforcement verified his status and moved on, Omar framed the encounter as proof of supposed persecution.
What stood out most was her admission that her son routinely carries his passport with him — even for routine errands. When pressed by the interviewer, Omar confirmed that this is something he does in anticipation of being stopped by immigration authorities.

President Trump also recently announced Ilhan was under investigation for marrying her brother.

From Routine Verification to Political Theater
ICE agents are legally permitted to question individuals when conducting immigration enforcement operations, particularly in areas where there are active investigations. Producing valid identification ends those encounters quickly — exactly what happened here.
But instead of acknowledging that reality, Omar escalated the story into an accusation of racial profiling. She claimed agents were targeting “young men who look Somali,” despite offering no evidence that her son was detained, arrested, or even cited for wrongdoing.
By her own account, ICE agents confirmed his identity and released him. No charges. No detention. No violation of rights. Yet Omar immediately cast the situation as proof of systemic abuse.
Mosque Claim Raises More Questions Than Answers
Omar also alleged that ICE agents entered a mosque where her son was present but left without detaining anyone. Again, no arrests, no confirmed misconduct — just insinuation.
Law enforcement routinely follows leads that take them into public spaces, including places of worship, when legally permitted. The fact that agents left without detaining anyone directly undermines the narrative Omar is pushing, but that detail was brushed aside in favor of fear-based rhetoric.
Blaming Trump, As Expected
The congresswoman tied the encounter to President Donald Trump, accusing him of fueling enforcement efforts through what she described as racist rhetoric. She recently sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, demanding explanations for ICE activity in Minnesota.
In that letter, Omar accused ICE of staging enforcement actions for “social media” and violating constitutional rights — claims that have become standard talking points for Democrats seeking to undermine immigration enforcement altogether.
She also asserted that ICE operations were a direct response to President Trump’s criticism of illegal immigration and refugee resettlement policies — once again conflating enforcement of federal law with racial animus.
Law Enforcement Doing Its Job Is Not Oppression
At its core, this story reveals more about Ilhan Omar than it does about ICE. Her son was stopped, identified, and released. That is how lawful enforcement works. No one was arrested. No rights were violated. No evidence of misconduct has been presented.
Yet Omar chose to use the moment to inflame tensions, accuse federal agents of racism, and attack a president whose administration has made border enforcement a priority.
For most Americans, this reads less like a civil rights crisis and more like a lawmaker exploiting a non-incident to score political points — while sending a troubling message that enforcing immigration law itself is somehow illegitimate.
