In a noteworthy development, Lucas Oil Stadium has been chosen again as the venue to host some of America’s most promising swimmers for one of the grandest swimming events ever organized, leading up to the LA28 Olympic Games. The announcement was made today by USA Swimming, the United States’ official regulating body for the sport of swimming, in collaboration with the Indiana Sports Corp. They disclosed that the city presenting this iconic event, spotlighting prime swimming talent as they aim for Olympic glory, in June 2028 would be Indianapolis, Indiana.
Occurring quadrennially, the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming garners the highest regard in the nation’s swimming fraternity. The 2028 Trials will be the exclusive selection meeting to decide the participants for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team. This team will bear the honor of representing Team USA on their home ground during the LA28 Olympic Games.
The 2024 Trials had created a phenomenal impact with their record-breaking achievements. The 2028 event aims to uphold this tradition and raise the bar even higher by integrating innovation on an unprecedented scale as it makes a comeback to a football stadium setting.
Lucas Oil Stadium has been chosen to orchestrate the Olympic selection meet. Presumed to be attended by a vast crowd ranging in hundreds of thousands, it would comprise families, friends, and fans alike. The nine-day event ensures a vibrant blend of competition and camaraderie.
The city of Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium present an ideal setting to equip our athletes and coaches for the magnitude of the LA28 Games. Our partnership with the city of Indianapolis and Indiana Sports Corp rekindles, and we take great pride in that relationship.
Our decision to choose the hosting location at this time instills certainty. It facilitates the formulation of targeted training plans and allows our athletes to optimally gear up for the challenging three years that lay ahead. The eventual objective is to ensure our athletes’ supremacy in the forthcoming events.
The prospect of welcoming the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming back to the city of Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium in 2028 fills us with immense excitement. We appreciate the extended collaboration and the privilege to host the event. We eagerly anticipate the return of all lanes to Indy in 2028.
A noteworthy feature of this event will be the installation of three temporary pools – a 50-meter competition pool accompanied by two warm-up pools – over the field in Lucas Oil Stadium. Having a multi-utility past, the state-of-the-art venue has a history of having honored highly reputable events.
Lucas Oil Stadium’s legacy includes colossal events like the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s Basketball Championship games, and the College Football Playoff National Championship among several others.
In an endeavor to transform the event into a city-wide celebration, USA Swimming and Indiana Sports Corp plan to set up a sporting festival around the event, thereby promoting the sport of swimming.
As an integral part of the collaboration, both organizations proudly pledge to support and sustain the Legacy Projects established in 2024 which have already significantly contributed to enhancing access to swimming and water safety education for children in community groups that have typically been underprivileged in the Indianapolis region.
The Legacy Projects aim to continue endorsing local initiatives and facilities with the requisite resources and counsel. This aid seeks to foster the sport of swimming and propagate the indispensable skill of water safety, thus creating a continuing influence which reaches far beyond the Trials themselves.
The prior Olympic Trials held in 2024 set a new benchmark in attendance when over 285,000 fans participated across all events. This figure notably surpassed the turnout observed during previous Trials.
The gathering did not just cement its place in terms of attendance, but it also played a noteworthy role in influencing the city economy of Indianapolis positively.
The event’s success extended beyond economic impact as it managed to draw significant attention on an international level. The achievement further amplified the Trials’ prestige as it continues to serve as a launching platform for competitive swimming talent.
Looking ahead, the anticipation for the 2028 Trials continues to grow, promising not just an exhilarating competition, but also a significant social, economic, and cultural impact for Indianapolis and beyond.
