The head of Iran’s Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, commended Pakistan for its unwavering stance and backing amidst the recent clash between Iran and Israel. The clash has been labeled by Iran as an unasked aggression. These commendations were expressed when Major General Mousavi spoke to Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, over a phone call.
During this call, Major General Mousavi extended his appreciation to Pakistan for standing by Iran during the period he termed as the ’12-day enforced conflict’. According to him, this conflict was instigated by Israel with support from its Western counterparts. He also touched upon the considerable number of Iranian casualties that came as a devastating result of this conflict.
This included valuable lives of senior commanders who were martyred in the conflict. Major General Mousavi held that Iran met this hostility with resolute and definitive retaliatory strikes, drawing the effective conclusion of a ceasefire from the opposition. He pointed out that the involvement of the United States was not only direct but was instrumental in protecting Israel from Iran’s counteracting missile and drone attacks.
Mousavi also raised criticism against several Western nations for their provision of verbal as well as physical backing to Israel through the course of the hostilities. The conflict which lasted over a period of 12 days commenced on the 13th of June when Israel spearheaded a bombing campaign in Iran. This campaign led to the death of top-tier military experts and scientists belonging to Iran’s nuclear agenda.
In the aftermath of this sudden offensive, Iran retorted back with ballistic missile attacks targeted at Israeli cities. The conflict originated merely a few days prior to the planned Iran-US meeting regarding Iran’s nuclear protocol, when Israel initiated targeted raids. In its reactive stance, Iran executed comprehensive retaliatory attacks on Israeli territories.
These counterstrikes allegedly inflicted ‘substantial damage’ to crucial positions within the territories under Israeli occupation. Iran’s health department has reported that a minimum of 627 civilians succumbed to their injuries and around 4,900 others were harmed during the war against Israel. The retaliatory missile strikes conducted by Iran resulted in the death of 28 people, as conveyed by Israeli representatives.
Israel put forth its intention of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. This has been a consistent point of contention with Iran denying such ambitions and stating its right to develop nuclear power for civilian uses. This altercation disrupted the ongoing nuclear discussions between Iran and the United States.
The US subsequently aligned itself with Israel’s campaign; simultaneously executing bunker-busting raids on nuclear facilities situated in Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz. Such developments have further strained the already delicate relationship between Iran and the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency.
Iran has denied the IAEA’s request for a thorough examination of the bombed nuclear sites. It has accused its chief, Rafael Grossi, of neglecting his responsibilities by not denouncing the Israeli and US offensives. Early this week, it was reported that Iranian lawmakers voted in favor of suspending collaboration with the agency.
The cooling tie between Iran and the IAEA may prove to be a significant setback to the international community, potentially increasing tensions and destabilizing regional politics. Iran seems unlikely to change its stance soon unless the IAEA and other involved parties make considerable efforts to address its concerns.
The recent war has underscored the fragility of peace in the Middle Eastern region and the crucial role diplomatic negotiations can play in preventing hostilities. It also highlights the complex interplay between power dynamics and national security strategies
Several countries like Pakistan have been acknowledged for their efforts in providing moral and political support during these taxing times. Nations must continue to encourage dialogue and political negotiations to avoid the horrifying consequences of armed conflict.
The bombing campaigns that claimed the lives of many prominent figures, not just soldiers but also scientists, demonstrate the extent to which conflict can escalate. A reminder of the heavy toll war takes on individuals, families, and societies.
The impact of the Iran-Israel conflict on the bilateral Iran-US talks regarding the nuclear programme emphasizes the interconnectedness of global politics. A single spark can lead to a chain reaction disrupting the precarious balance of international relations.
As the dust settles, nations around the globe will be observing the next moves of Iran, Israel, and the US closely. The unfolding events will likely have far-reaching consequences for regional security, nuclear diplomacy, and the quest for lasting peace in the Middle East.
