Vice President J.D. Vance emerged from a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans expressing renewed optimism that President Trump’s flagship legislative package—dubbed the “One Big, Beautiful Bill”—is on track for passage.

“This was one of the most productive meetings we’ve had,” Vance told reporters, highlighting broad agreement on several of the bill’s cornerstone policies. Chief among them: safeguarding taxpayer dollars from misuse and reinforcing work requirements for government benefits.

“There’s strong consensus that Medicaid should go to American citizens in need, not to illegal immigrants or able-bodied adults who choose not to work,” Vance said. “The American people expect a safety net, not a hammock—and this bill reflects that.”

The bill, a sweeping combination of budget reforms, tax relief, immigration enforcement, and federal efficiency mandates, has been the central focus of Trump’s second-term domestic agenda. Senate Republicans are now hammering out final language, with Vance confident that lingering issues—such as Medicaid eligibility guidelines and spending caps—will be resolved in short order.

Senate Majority Whip John Thune backed Vance’s assessment, calling the Medicaid reforms “common sense” and saying they would ensure federal dollars are directed to “those who’ve earned support, not those gaming the system.”

Vance also met privately with key appropriators including Senator Susan Collins to push for a timeline that would see the bill finalized by the end of the July 4 recess. “We’re close,” Vance said. “And we’re determined to get this across the finish line.”

If passed, the bill would mark a major legislative victory for the Trump administration—delivering on promises of fiscal responsibility, national sovereignty, and support for working families—while reshaping the budget battles heading into the fall.
