The Justice Department has fired Maurene Comey, the federal prosecutor who handled the Jeffrey Epstein case and is the daughter of disgraced former FBI Director James Comey.
Comey, who worked in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, prosecuted Epstein during President Trump’s first term and later played a lead role in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial. Multiple reports confirmed her dismissal on Wednesday, with The New York Times noting the firing was carried out under executive authority from the president.
While no official reason was provided, sources familiar with the matter say Comey opposed the Trump administration’s move to release files related to Epstein’s network, arguing they could impact future prosecutions. Her stance reportedly placed her at odds with Attorney General Pam Bondi and other senior officials seeking full disclosure.
Comey’s termination comes just days after the Justice Department reiterated its position that Epstein acted alone and committed suicide — a conclusion that continues to face skepticism across party lines. A recent DOJ memo also denied the existence of any client list, further fueling public frustration after months of promises from administration officials that such information would be released.
In July 2019, the DOJ charged Epstein with operating a vast trafficking ring involving underage girls, saying he relied on “employees and associates” to arrange sexual abuse across multiple properties. However, Epstein’s death in a Manhattan jail cell weeks later meant those charges never went to trial.
Comey’s firing has become the latest flashpoint in a controversy that refuses to fade. President Trump has expressed frustration with lingering questions about the Epstein case, calling it a “hoax” pushed by the media and “pretty bad people.”
“I don’t understand it. He’s been dead a long time. It’s sordid, but it’s boring,” Trump said. “This is like the Russia hoax all over again — the fake Steele Dossier, the fake Mueller investigation. This is just another fake story being pushed by people who don’t care about the truth.”
The firing of Maurene Comey — daughter of one of Trump’s fiercest Deep State enemies — will likely be seen by Trump’s base as a long-overdue course correction, especially after the DOJ failed to deliver on promises of full transparency in the Epstein case.
