In the heart of Los Angeles, the imposition of a curfew has been lifted by Mayor Karen Bass. The curfew, enforced initially to counteract civil unrest and damages relating to protests against the current administration’s immigration policies, was eliminated on Tuesday. Mayor Bass regarded the curfew as an effective deterrent to crime and a safeguard protecting businesses and residents from the brunt of the demonstrations.
June 10 marked the beginning of the enforcement of the curfew, which was primarily aimed at curbing crime and keeping businesses and residents safe from unsanctioned activities. Mayor Bass, an affiliate of the Democratic party, viewed the curfew as a significant factor in crime control and the safeguarding of commercial establishments and the downtown populace.
Owing to a reported decrease in arrests tied to evening protests, Mayor Bass decided to reduce the duration of the curfew on Monday. She attributed this lessening aggression and destruction in the city centre to the demonstrations that followed the protests, necessitating an amendment in curfew hours.
The introduction of the curfew was deemed necessary when the city found itself on the brink of socio-political crisis after a flurry of burglaries. About twenty-three commercial entities fell victim to burglary, a consequence pinned on individuals stirring unrest in the city. This prompted the imposition of the curfew.
The curfew applied to a relatively small portion of Los Angeles – specifically, a one-square-mile portion of the city centre. This zone included the primary locations where the demonstrations took place. While comparatively diminutive, the significance of this region amplified the impact of the curfew and its subsequent lifting.
President Trump instigated the deployment of a considerable number of National Guard troops and Marines following the civil unrest in America’s second-largest city. An estimated 4,000 National Guard personnel accompanied by 700 Marines were dispatched in response to the surge in protests against the enforcement of stringent immigration rules.
Trump’s decision to prioritize deportations from cities governed by the Democratic party was made public last Sunday. This move was in response to the widespread public outrage occurring in major cities such as Los Angeles, against the administration’s aggressive implementation of immigration laws.
