In the early hours of February 13, a distressing domestic incident led to the arrest of a man from Mohawk, identified as Christian M. Callen, age 49. The conflict exploded in a private residence located on Hicks Road, in the jurisdiction of the Town of Warren. Consequently, Callen is now facing multiple serious charges as a result of this incident.
Responding to a phone call relayed through the Herkimer County 911 system, New York State Police was alerted to a house disturbance. On arrival at the scene, the officers encountered a series of events more dramatic than a mere argument. Evidence uncovered at the scene suggested that the incident had escalated to unexpected and distressing levels.
The investigation revealed that at the height of the tumult, Callen had ignited a fire on the floor of one of the bedrooms. It was a hectic situation, on the precipice of becoming a major conflagration. However, those who were inside the residence had managed to get the situation under control; they extinguished the fire prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
Additionally, Callen, in what can only be perceived as a fit of rage, used his vehicle as a weapon. He reportedly rammed his truck into multiple vehicles parked in the driveway of the residence. The reckless act left several vehicles marred by significant damage.
While the fire and the vehicular chaos were damaging in themselves, the cruel brunt of the incident was borne by two victims associated with the case. The confrontation involved violent physical abuse, with Callen alleged to have assaulted a female victim during the course of the incident.
It was reported that he did not stop at assault; Callen was also purported to have attempted to strangle his victim. The actions added further gravity to the charges already stacked against him, showcasing the truly alarming nature of this incident.
A brave older witness made an effort to step into the confrontation. Unfortunately, this person too faced the fury of Callen’s wrath. The witness suffered bodily harm while attempting to intervene, signifying that the damage of the incident spread beyond the immediate conflict.
Following their assessment of the scene, State Police took Callen into custody. Their groundwork and witness testimonies provided them with sufficient cause to arrest and charge him. His actions led to an array of charges weighed against him, each more severe than the last.
The set of charges laid against Callen include several felonies. He’s facing the serious allegations of arson in relation to the bedroom fire, as well as charges of assault and criminal mischief for the physical and vehicular damage.
More concerningly, a charge of strangulation has also been brought against him. In addition, there are also further misdemeanors: assault and endangering the welfare of a minor. The extensive list of charges demonstrates the severity and complexity of the incident.
Following his arrest, Callen was transferred to Wynn Hospital for a medical evaluation. Once it was deemed safe, Callen was returned to the custody of the New York State Police. The procedure was carried out in order to ensure he was in a suitable state of health for imprisonment.
Callen was subsequently arraigned and took the slow walk to Herkimer County Jail. His freedom now carries a hefty price – his bail has been set at a staggering $50,000 in cash or alternatively a $100,000 bond.
With Callen now in awaited judicial process, the court proceedings will continue the following month. The Town of Warren Court will revisit the case in March, where the assorted charges will be formally presented and scrutinized.
