Meteorologists Reveal How Much More Snow Is Expected To Hit NYC This Winter
New Yorkers should brace for a snowier season than last year, forecasters say.
AccuWeather predicts the city will see between 17 and 21 inches of snow this winter, a bump from the meager total of less than 13 inches recorded last season. While the number is still below New York’s typical winter average of nearly 30 inches, it’s enough to raise concerns about travel headaches and icy streets.
Buffalo, as usual, is expected to take the brunt of the snow. Meteorologists say the upstate city could be buried under 90 to 100 inches this winter.
AccuWeather’s lead long-range forecaster, Paul Pastelok, warned that storm systems developing in western Canada could dip into the U.S. heartland and then barrel toward the mid-Atlantic coast, setting New York up for potential nor’easters.
“Our forecast numbers for New York City are conservative right now, but we’re still watching out for the potential for it to be a higher impact season,” Pastelok explained.
While average temperatures are expected overall, February could bring an “intense cold blast” sweeping from the Midwest to the East Coast. That could pair with storms from the southwest, raising the risk of messy snow-and-rain mixes and snarled travel.
