The punishment phase of the trial for a man charged with a series of severe crimes that took place over a month in North Miami, continued for a second day. The individuals on trial, Anthwan Ragan, was convicted of capital murder on the 3rd of April, as a direct result of footage from a security camera that documented his altercation and subsequent shooting of a 21-year-old named Luis Perez. This incident took place in a Motel 7 stairwell in 2013.
Ragan found himself once again in the courtroom on Tuesday, standing before the same group of jurors who previously declared him guilty. During the trial, the court listened to statements made by Ragan’s father and uncle, as well as several individuals who claimed to be his victims.
Wednesday morning marked the start of the day with two psychologists providing their professional insights on Ragan’s upbringing and mental health status during the time he committed these crimes. Dr. Karim Yamut contributed to the discussion by stating, ‘What they discovered was that, when making the decision, adults show a significant frontal lobe activity, while adolescents exhibit considerably less activity in the same area’.
It’s relevant to note that Ragan was a mere 19 years old at the time he committed these heinous crimes. Experts in the medical field brought attention to the fact that his childhood was fraught with challenges. Dimensions of his troubled upbringing brought up included having a teenage mother and a father who found himself behind bars soon after his birth.
In addition to these, professionals have shed light on Ragan’s diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and impulse-control disorder, neither of which were being treated with medication. Ragan’s counsel also discussed his learning disabilities as well as a series of circumstances from his environment.
They pointed out that what they observe could be referred to as a ‘criminal genic’ environment, an environment that increments risk factors leading someone towards criminal behavior,’ as stated by Yamut. Consequently, this has left Ragan’s future in the hands of the jury who will decide his sentencing.
The jury are tasked with deciding the fate of Ragan, by determining whether he should be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or should face the death penalty. Ragan’s testimony is anticipated to occur as early as the upcoming Thursday.
Moreover, it is possible for the jury to reach a decision regarding sentencing on the same day.
