Jessica S. Tisch, the Commissioner of the New York Police Department, stated in a recent update that the city has witnessed the least number of shootings this year since such records began. This historic low occurred in the month of May, shattering the earlier record set in 2018. According to official figures, the incidents of shootings clocked in at 264, slighter lower than 2018’s record-breaking low of 267 incidents.
The city’s mayor lauded the historic achievement of recording the least number of shootings and murders in the first five months of any year up until now. The mayor strongly emphasized that such positive developments don’t occur by chance; they require adept management, even during challenging times when the state’s justice laws seem to ease the cycling of offenders through the criminal justice system.
This downward trend in gun violence was parallelled in Staten Island as well. The New York Police Department’s CompStat statistics noted a total of three shootings on the Island so far this year, which is down from six recorded during an equivalent period in 2024.
This sets a record for the least number of shooting incidents in Staten Island since the NYPD began using the CompStat tracking system in 1994. Beyond just shootings, the borough showed a comparable decrease in the overall crime rate, which is approximately 10% lower than the same period last year, as indicated by the CompStat data.
A recent shooting victim, a 25-year-old male from Port Richmond, is not yet included in the latest CompStat report. The young man, according to local law enforcement, was the target of a drive-by shooting early Tuesday morning.
In another case, a 26-year-old man reported that he was shot in his buttocks by an unidentified person near the intersection of Clove Road and Waldron Avenue in Sunnyside. The man reported the incident approximately five days after it occurred, when he checked into Mount Sinai West Hospital in Manhattan for treatment of his gunshot wound. He was reported to be in stable condition.
The details related to the suspect have still not been determined by the authorities, and as a result, the suspect’s description remains unavailable. Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident. The precise details remain murky as they continue to investigate the case actively.
In another incident, a 25-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in Mariners Harbor. The victim was immediately rushed to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton by paramedics, where his condition was listed as stable.
In the last recorded shooting, a 25-year-old male tragically lost his life after he was critically shot in the torso. The incident happened on a bustling section of Bay Street in Tompkinsville. The victim, later identified as Jesse Pimental from Oakwood, was found unresponsive by officers at the scene.
Despite emergency medical attention, Pimental’s life could not be saved. He was urgently taken to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities continue to investigate his shooting
As highlighted by these examples, violence in the community continues to pose a significant challenge and concern, despite the overall decrease in shootings and crime. Each of these cases spotlights the importance of ongoing efforts to reduce violence and improve safety throughout all neighborhoods in the city.
Public safety officials are resolute in their efforts to further reduce crimes and violence, and are constantly working on measures and strategies to ensure that every neighborhood in the city is safe. These recent shooting incidents emphasize the need for continuous vigilance and persistent initiatives to lessen crime rates, even in light of recent successes.
It is important to take note of these successful efforts in reducing crime, but the fight against violence is ongoing. Each and every resident’s safety is paramount, and public agencies, along with the community, must work together with a shared sense of purpose to maintain and further this positive trend.
