NYC Sanitation Worker Decapitated by Girlfriend’s Teenage Son Inside Staten Island Home: Cops

A 45 year old New York City Sanitation worker on the verge of retirement was allegedly decapitated by his girlfriend’s troubled teenage son inside a Staten Island home Monday, in one of the borough’s most shocking domestic killings in years, police and sources said.

Officers responded to a frantic 911 call around 4:20 p.m. about a stabbing at a home on Cary Avenue in West Brighton and found the victim with multiple wounds to his head and neck. According to sources, his head had been severed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The alleged attacker, the 19 year old son of the victim’s longtime girlfriend, was arrested at the house but had not yet been charged as of late Monday, police said. Sources told The Post the teen had a history of serious mental health problems.

Investigators say the grisly scene was discovered by the suspect’s younger sister, who returned home from school to find blood trails through the house. The girl told police her brother had said he “did something bad” before she found the victim’s body in the bathtub, decapitated, with a knife still lodged in his neck.

Friends of the victim said he had been forced onto disability because of severe vision loss and was just months from retirement. Outside the crime scene, close friends Louis and Donna Ortiz, 47 and 46, described him as “the nicest guy in the world” — an easy going man who loved fishing and “would give you the shirt off his back.”

“It’s a crime scene. It’s crazy,” Louis said. “I had to run over here because I didn’t want to believe it until I saw it.” Donna added, “This didn’t deserve to happen to him. He was just about to retire and live his life as best as he could.”

Louis said he’d seen his friend just days earlier to help him buy a truck for his girlfriend. He believes his vision loss made him “absolutely” more vulnerable.

The couple had been together nearly six years and, friends said, “always had their ups and downs with the kids.” Louis described the teenage suspect as “sweet as pie” despite known issues, often playing video games with Donna’s stepson. “The boy was always going through stuff in school. Mental health issues. The city’s got to do more with mental health,” he said.

Donna, who once worked at a psychiatric center, echoed that sentiment. “He’d be alive right now if the city dealt with mental health,” she said.

Neighbor Mariano Castro, 36, said he had never seen any animosity between the victim and the suspect. “I never saw them fighting each other, so that’s completely crazy. That’s all I can say,” the shaken construction worker told The Post.

Police sources said the family had a history of domestic incident reports. Officers swarmed the one story home late Monday as neighbors gathered across the street, stunned by the brutality. The investigation is ongoing.
