Attorney General Pam Bondi has issued a stern warning to officials in Maine, emphasizing the necessity of adhering to federal laws that protect women’s sports. This action comes in response to certain states’ reluctance to enforce President Donald Trump’s executive order, which prohibits biological males from participating in female sports categories.

In her communication, Bondi stated, “This Department of Justice will defend women and does not tolerate state officials who ignore federal law.” She further asserted the department’s commitment to utilizing all legal avenues to ensure state compliance with both federal statutes and the executive order aimed at safeguarding women’s sports.

The executive order in question articulates that permitting biological males to compete in women’s sports is “demeaning, unfair, and dangerous to women and girls.” It also highlights that such practices violate Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972, which ensures equal opportunities for women and girls in competitive sports.

This development follows a recent exchange at the White House, where President Trump directly addressed Maine Governor Janet Mills regarding the state’s stance on this issue. During the encounter, President Trump underscored the federal government’s position and hinted at potential repercussions, including the withdrawal of federal funding, should the state fail to comply.

The Department of Education has initiated Title IX investigations into Maine’s Department of Education. Similarly, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has commenced a compliance review of the University of Maine to assess adherence to federal regulations concerning women’s sports.

These actions underscore the administration’s dedication to enforcing policies that maintain the integrity and fairness of women’s athletic competitions across the nation.
