Poll: 70% of Voters Say Democratic Party Is ‘Out of Touch’ with Their Priorities
A new poll released Monday finds a staggering 70% of Americans believe the Democratic Party is out of step with the issues that matter most to voters — the highest disconnect rating the party has seen in over a decade.
The data comes from Welcome, a center-left policy group, whose “Deciding to Win” survey warns that Democrats are losing ground among working-class and minority voters due to an overemphasis on cultural and identity-driven politics at the expense of more pressing economic and security concerns.
Back in 2013, just over half of voters (51%) said Democrats were out of touch. That figure has now soared to 70% in 2025. Meanwhile, the Republican Party saw modest improvement in perception over the same period, going from 70% viewed as out of touch to 65%.
The report identifies a clear voter backlash to the Democratic Party’s current priorities. Voters overwhelmingly said they believe Democrats are too focused on “protecting the rights of undocumented immigrants” and LGBTQ+ issues, and not focused enough on lowering the cost of living, fighting crime, securing the border, and improving access to affordable healthcare.
“Winning does not happen by accident,” the report states. “It is a choice to be disciplined and strategic — and to confront difficult truths about the electorate.”
The poll also highlights a growing rift between the Democratic Party and the working-class voter base it once relied on. Since 2012, Democrats have seen major losses among non-college-educated Latino voters (down 16%), AAPI voters (down 15%), and Black voters (down 11%). The only demographic where support increased was among college-educated white voters (up 4%).
Top Issues for Voters That Democrats Are Under-Prioritizing (per Welcome):
-
Protecting Social Security and Medicare (82%)
-
Lowering everyday costs (79%)
-
Making healthcare more affordable (74%)
-
Creating jobs and economic growth (74%)
-
Cutting middle-class taxes (66%)
-
Lowering the crime rate (56%)
-
Securing the border (53%)
Lowest-Priority Issues for Voters:
-
Protecting illegal immigrants (23%)
-
Hiking taxes to fund social programs (24%)
-
Protecting LGBTQ rights (25%)
Voters believe the party is 26% too focused on illegal immigrant rights, and 23% too focused on LGBTQ issues, while underemphasizing key bread-and-butter issues like inflation, public safety, and border control.
Welcome’s conclusion: if Democrats want to win elections again, they’ll need to course-correct — fast.
