The world woke up to the somber news on Monday of the passing of Pope Francis at the age of 88. He will always be remembered as a significant figure in religious history for being the first Pope hailing from Latin America. Bishop David Bonnar, in sharing this grievous news, found it to be a moment of intense grief for the entire church community and personally for himself too.

With an air of respect and admiration, Bishop Bonnar shared his reflections on the kind of leader Pope Francis was. In his words, ‘The Pontiff modelled a pastoral perspective in the church, firmly embedded in the teachings of Jesus Christ.’ He noted that the Pope’s actions and speech reflected this view throughout his papacy.

Bonnar, moved by the Pope’s life and deeds, has chosen to hold a Mass in honor of Pope Francis. The event is planned to take place at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the revered St. Columba Cathedral located in Youngstown. This gathering will serve as a moment for all to reminisce and pay tribute to the life and works of Pope Francis.

Having felt a unique connection with Francis during his lifetime, Bonnar reminisced about the Pope’s distinct approach toward the teachings of the Gospel. Bonnar fondly remembered Francis saying, ‘His focus was solidly on the Gospel’s delights, and he gave us a firm base to exemplify our faith.’

Scheduled on the upcoming Thursday evening, the Mass will provide an occasion for all those present to express their gratitude for Pope Francis’s contributions. Bishop Bonnar explains, ‘The communal gathering will afford us a chance to appreciate the wisdom and guidance Pope Francis brought into the church.’

Although the passing away of Pope Francis brings with it a sense of sorrow, Bishop Bonnar offers comforting words to the faithful. He encourages them to find comfort in the teachings of Jesus and express gratitude for the Pope’s pastoral vision, based on the doctrine of Jesus Christ.

Pope Francis will be remembered for the language he imparted to the faithful: words of joy, love, hope, mercy, encounter, listening, and compassion, among others. Bonnar reiterated that the believers must remember and use this language introduced by the beloved Pope.

Expressing a deep sense of sorrow and respect, Bishop Bonnar concluded, ‘While the Pope’s demise is a misfortune, we rejoice in the hope of resurrection and the belief that Pope Francis is at peace, free from worldly suffering, witnessing God in His Kingdom. May the rest that Pope Francis receives be peaceful, Amen.’

Simultaneously, Governor Mike DeWine also expressed his thoughts on Pope Francis’s selfless service. Acknowledging his deep faith, DeWine stated, ‘Fran and I feel the sorrow brought about by the loss of Pope Francis. The fondness and care that he had for everyone – the needy, the yet-to-be-born, the homeless, immigrants seeking a brighter future, individuals of every religion, and even those without a faith – were clear for everyone to see from the time of his papacy’s inception until his last public appearance.’

Governor DeWine emphasized Pope Francis’ demonstrative acts of humility through his tireless work with the disadvantaged. His life left a conspicuous mark that indicated his modest nature and unwavering dedication to the tenets of the Gospel, continuing to inspire right till his last breath.

In continuation, DeWine stated, ‘His interaction with the impoverished exemplified his humble existence. Until his final moments on this planet, he propagated the Gospel’s teachings. His kindness brought hope into the lives of many globally.’

Pope Francis’s death brings a deep sense of loss universally, highlighting his impactful and compassionate leadership. His immense love for all people, irrespective of their circumstances or faith, was a strong testament to his service-oriented life, which he compassionately carried out until his final moments.
