Publix Confirms It Will Follow New Florida Law Allowing Open Carry of Firearms

Publix Super Markets has announced it will comply with Florida’s newly enacted open carry law, allowing customers to openly carry firearms in its stores across the state.

The confirmation follows a September 10 ruling from Florida’s First District Court of Appeals, which held that the right to open carry is constitutionally protected. Days later, on September 15, Attorney General James Uthmeier declared open carry “the law of the state,” officially taking effect on September 25, 2025.

In a statement shared by BayNews9, Publix said, “As of Sept. 25, 2025, Florida law allows the open carry of firearms. Publix follows all federal, state and local laws. Treating customers with dignity and respect is a founding belief at Publix. In any instance where a customer creates a threatening, erratic or dangerous shopping experience — whether they are openly carrying a firearm or not — we will engage local law enforcement to protect our customers and associates.”

The policy shift places Publix among the first major retailers to confirm adherence to the new open carry law, which has sparked debate across the state.
