NYPD Commissioner, Jessica S. Tisch, declared that the current year has seen a record-breaking decrease in shootings, the lowest in the city’s known history. She drew attention to the month of May, which held the lowest rate of shootings in its history. Recently, the city reported a total of 264 shootings, surpassing the preceding historic low of 267 shootings in 2018.
The mayor shared a significant milestone for the city: the first five months of the current year witnessed the lowest ever shooting and murder rates recorded in the city’s history. This extraordinary outcome is not accidental, and undoubtedly contrasts with the state’s criminal justice laws, often criticized for creating an easy exit in the penal system.
Reflecting the same trend, Staten Island’s crime rate has also followed a similar pattern. According to the NYPD CompStat data, the borough showed only three shootings for the ongoing year, as against six during the same period in 2024. This reduction sets a new precedent, marking the lowest number of shooting incidents in Staten Island’s history since the inception of NYPD’s CompStat in 1994.
In terms of overall crime, the borough witnessed approximately 10% decrease from the same duration the previous year, as per the records from CompStat. These statistics offer a broad perspective on the crime rate in the region, indicating a significant and consistent de-escalation.
With all achievements registered, a recent incident involving a 25-year-old man shot in a drive-by shooting in Port Richmond hasn’t been included in the latest CompStat report. This episode brings new light to the current prospect by highlighting the continual existence of criminal activity within the city.
In another separate incident, a 26-year-old man reported being shot in the buttocks by an unidentified individual near Clove Road and Waldron Avenue in Sunnyside. The attack supposedly occurred around 10 PM, but the victim waited five days to report the injury after being admitted to Mount Sinai West Hospital in Manhattan in a stable condition.
As per police records, the search for the suspect continues, with no concrete description available. The case remains under investigation, leaving an open thread in this seemingly improving picture of public safety in the city.
Further, another 25-year-old individual suffered a gunshot injury in Mariners Harbor, as per the police report. The emergency services transferred the victim to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, where he was declared to be in a stable condition.
Continuing the series of events, a fatal incident occurred on a business hub of Bay Street in Tompkinsville. 25-year-old Jesse Pimental from Oakwood was the victim in this tragic case. The police found him non-responsive with a bullet wound.
The critically injured Pimental was promptly transported to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton. Despite their best efforts, the medical team was unable to save his life. This brutal incident further illustrates the ongoing struggles in controlling the crime rate in the city.
