Sneak and Strategy Amplified in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord Update
In a recent move, TaleWorlds unleashed a comprehensive update on the beta of Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord (termed as version 1.3). For Steam gamers, opting into the beta branch from the game’s library will facilitate access to this update. However, TaleWorlds have indicated that seamless compatibility with previously saved games can’t be entirely assured, and some instabilities might still linger.
The significant scale of the update is expected to draw a lot of gamers into trying it out, courtesy of the introduction of multiple innovative features. Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord, with this new patch, now comes equipped with an enhanced stealth mechanism that enables escape from prison situations and confrontations in hideouts.
Non-player characters (NPCs) in the game have been imbued with the ability to discover player characters using visual and auditory clues. These NPCs react to noise, body movements, spotting alarmed allies or bodies. Their vision has been crafted to be sharper when looking downwards, and they find it difficult to identify activity above them.
Factors like light exposure have been intricately woven into the game dynamics. For instance, you can seek cover in shadows during nighttime, whereas torch-lit spaces will highlight your presence. Tall grass patches and dimly lit corners serve as subtle protection points and enhanced stealth can be attained by crouching that limits visibility.
The NPCs are programmed to shift through four levels of alert states: Neutral, Cautious, Searching, and Fully Alarmed. The new update brings distraction mechanisms in the form of thrown objects and noise, but some foes will stand firm, refusing to be diverted.
The stealth attacks in the updated game inflict additional damage to unaware targets. The ability to perform melee and ranged assaults while crouching has been added to certain weapons. Additionally, players can covertly shift bodies, thus eliminating any chance of alarm triggering.
The roguery skill of players now directly influences the damage inflicted by stealth attacks as well as influencing the speed at which players can move and their noise level while crouching. Adding to the stealth capabilities, TaleWorlds introduced a disguise system into the game dynamics.
The disguise system works on principles of subtlety and slyness. Any suspicious activity, such as sprinting, taking out weapons or hiding, will raise the alarm among guards. A high suspicion level initiates an investigation from the guards.
Once the player is spotted, their cover will be blown, putting all guards on a high alert state, triggering a chase. Evading capture involves a successful getaway from the settlement, failure of which leads to imprisonment. Having a productive exchange with an accomplice allows unrestricted movement around the town in disguise during subsequent visits.
This expansive Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord update doesn’t stop at that; it further overhauls the diplomatic aspect of the game. Players are now enabled to forge alliances between kingdoms; any given kingdom can sustain two alliances lasting a year in the game’s timeline.
Trade agreements can also be established following a similar blueprint, i.e., no more than two agreements with each standing valid for one in-game year. The introduction of a parley feature allows players to engage in negotiations with enemy-ruled settlements accommodating nobles, thereby gaining the ability to select the noble they wish to converse with.
An addition to the weapons arsenal, the Slings, has been included in the game. This one-handed weapon can be operated alongside a shield. Further, morale and retreat mechanisms have been incorporated into battle scenarios and simulations, adding another strategic dimension to the game.
The updated Bannerlord now presents up to a hundred unforeseen random events that can occur throughout gameplay. Gamers must address these sudden situations through pop-up menus where the resulting choices can affect their character’s traits, abilities, party, items or finances.
Furthermore, this revised version brings into play a new ‘Deserter’ faction and introduces a ‘Patrol’ party type. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is also gearing up for its inaugural expansion, War Sails, promising enhancement of the game with fully operative naval warfare system and introduction of a new race, the Nords.
The release of War Sails was initially targeted for June but has been postponed to the Fall of 2025. The exuberant features introduced in this update, coupled with the forthcoming expansion, is anticipated to elevate the gameplay in the already dynamic world of Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord.
