Sony Announces End Of Physical PlayStation Game Discs Starting In 2028

Sony has announced that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, marking a major change for the gaming industry and the future of console ownership.

Under the new policy, all new PlayStation titles released after January 2028 will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and other online retailers. Games released before the cutoff date will continue to be sold on physical media while supplies last.

Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer habits as more players choose to purchase games digitally rather than through traditional retail stores.

“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” the company said in a statement. “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

The announcement comes shortly after reports that the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI would contain only a download code rather than an actual game disc, a decision that generated backlash from many gamers.

While digital games offer benefits such as instant downloads and easier access to large game libraries, critics argue that the shift comes at the expense of consumer ownership rights.

Unlike physical games, digital purchases cannot be resold, traded in, or easily shared with friends and family. Players are also dependent on maintaining access to their online accounts and platform servers in order to continue accessing their purchases.

The move represents one of the biggest changes in the history of console gaming and could signal a future where physical media becomes a thing of the past across the entire industry.
