Soros-Backed Leftist Group Behind Campaign To Force Government Shutdown
A left-wing activist group funded by George Soros and his son Alexander is driving a pressure campaign aimed at forcing Senate Democrats to oppose government funding and push the nation into a partial shutdown.
The group, Indivisible, best known for its “No Kings” protests and other resistance stunts targeting President Donald Trump, has rolled out a new online push telling activists to call their Democratic senators and demand they vote against bipartisan funding agreements. The group even provides a script for callers to follow.
According to Indivisible’s own website, its political arm, the Indivisible Project, has raked in $7.6 million in grants from Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF) over the last eight years. OSF, founded in 1993, is chaired today by Alexander Soros and has poured billions into left-wing causes worldwide.
“Federal government funding runs out on September 30 — and Republicans need Democratic votes to clear the filibuster and avoid a government shutdown,” the group’s call tool says. “Democrats have a strong hand to play. They must use it to deny Donald Trump the blank check Republicans want to hand him!”
If Congress fails to pass a continuing resolution by the Tuesday deadline, the government will enter a partial shutdown. Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have already blocked Republican proposals, demanding left-wing policy wins in exchange for keeping the government open.
Indivisible’s script goes further, blasting Schumer directly: “In the last big funding fight, Chuck Schumer and a handful of other Dems surrendered—rolling over and letting Trump weaponize federal funds to rob our services, militarize our cities, and terrorize our communities. That cannot happen again.” (RELATED: Justice Dept Targets George Soros Empire Over Suspected Links To Violent Extremists)
The language mirrors the growing rift inside the Democratic Party. After Schumer worked with Republicans in March to pass a spending bill, Indivisible openly demanded his resignation, even hosting events where members wrote him mock retirement cards. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez piled on, slamming Schumer and fueling rumors she may challenge him in 2028. A Data for Progress poll released in March showed her leading the longtime senator by nearly 20 points in a hypothetical primary matchup.
Meanwhile, the House on Sept. 19 passed a GOP-backed “clean” CR to fund the government through Nov. 21, with support from just one Democrat. It was immediately filibustered in the Senate. On the same day, Senate Democrats’ counter-offer failed as well. Their version would have reversed more than $1 trillion in cost savings from Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, reinstated Obamacare subsidies for illegal immigrants, and stripped away Medicaid work requirements.
The White House blasted the left-wing demands, accusing Senate Democrats of caving to Soros-funded radicals. “More than one trillion dollars in new spending, taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens, half a billion dollars for left-wing media, and the elimination of the rural health care fund are all nonstarters – completely out of touch with what the American people want,” one official said.
“If Democrats cave to their extremist base, they will own this shutdown and put law enforcement at risk, cut WIC benefits for mothers and children, and threaten health care for seniors,” the official added.
President Trump is scheduled to meet Monday with Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Speaker Mike Johnson, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune in a last-ditch attempt to avert a shutdown.
