Speaker Johnson Says He ‘Probably Could Have Ejected’ More Democrats During State Of The Union
House Speaker Mike Johnson said after President Trump’s record breaking State of the Union that he likely could have removed additional Democrats from the chamber over what he described as “shameful” behavior.
Throughout the nearly two hour address, several Democratic lawmakers jeered and protested during portions of the president’s speech. Among them were Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who left the chamber before the speech concluded. Tlaib wore a pin with an anti ICE message and was visibly reacting during parts of the address.
Speaking to Newsmax after the speech, Johnson said there were “a couple of House members” he probably could have ejected but chose not to. He said he believed it was better for the American people to see the behavior for themselves rather than escalate the situation by ordering more removals.
Representative Al Green was removed from the chamber by the House sergeant at arms after refusing to sit and displaying a protest sign. Green had also been removed during a prior Trump address to Congress for disruptive conduct.
Johnson criticized Democrats for what he said were inappropriate moments of standing and refusing to stand. He argued they did not stand during remarks about border security and protecting American citizens, while applauding positions he said were out of step with working families.
President Trump also directly addressed Democratic lawmakers during the speech at times, criticizing them for declining to stand during certain policy moments. The exchange added to the combative tone that marked portions of the address.
Johnson concluded by emphasizing the importance of the upcoming midterm elections, warning that losing the House majority would significantly hinder the president’s legislative agenda.
