Speaker Mike Johnson: House GOP Charging Ahead With Trump’s ‘Affordability Agenda’

Speaker Mike Johnson says House Republicans are moving “full steam ahead” on President Donald Trump’s affordability agenda, pledging to deliver concrete economic relief for working families before the end of the legislative year.

In a Friday interview with Fox News Digital, Johnson emphasized that even with limited days left in session, the GOP-controlled House is focused on codifying Trump’s executive orders, dismantling Biden-era regulations, and passing key pieces of legislation aimed at lowering the cost of living for millions of Americans.

Johnson: “Affordability” Is the Mission

“We have an affordability agenda, as the president has been touting, and we have to do that in earnest,” Johnson said. “Healthcare is part of that. But it’s just the costs across the board.”

Johnson cited inflation under President Biden as a driving force behind the economic hardship facing families, adding, “We the people rightfully revolted against that, and gave us the power again in January. But the economy is a very complex thing, you don’t flip a switch and just change it all in one week. It takes a while.”

Trump’s ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ Rebranded as Tax Relief

A cornerstone of the affordability plan is Trump’s rebranded “Working Families’ Tax Cut”, which evolved from the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.” The proposal includes eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay, reducing the tax burden for senior citizens, and expanding deductions for middle-class families.

“These are pro-growth policies,” Johnson said. “And they’re going to fuel investment, bring back small business growth, and encourage innovation. That’s how you jumpstart an economy.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has echoed this optimism, predicting a full-fledged economic rebound by the second quarter of 2026 as these policies begin to take effect.

Cutting Energy Costs, Fixing Permitting System

Energy affordability is also a central focus. Johnson confirmed that House Republicans will move forward with bills aimed at lowering fuel and electricity costs by reforming the nation’s antiquated permitting system — an issue that has stalled new energy infrastructure for years.

“We’ve got permitting reform on the table. We’ve got real energy legislation coming up,” Johnson said. “We’re going to reverse the disastrous anti-energy agenda that Democrats forced on Americans.”

Obamacare Overhaul and Healthcare Savings

In parallel with tax and energy reforms, House committees are also advancing a new healthcare package. The goal is to bring down premiums, expand coverage options, and overhaul Obamacare, which Johnson called a “badly flawed system.”

While specific details of the GOP healthcare plan have yet to be revealed, Johnson said it would include provisions aimed at lowering prescription drug costs, increasing transparency, and introducing more competition in the insurance market.

A Final Push Before Year’s End

Despite the limited legislative calendar, Johnson said the GOP has momentum — and a mandate.

“There’s a lot of initiatives left on the table, things for us to do and a short amount of time to do it in,” Johnson said. “But we’re really bullish about the ideas we’re bringing forward over the next few weeks.”

With inflation still lingering, wages lagging, and the cost of everyday goods still well above pre-COVID levels, House Republicans are betting that aggressive action now will pave the way for a full economic rebound heading into 2026.
