Swalwell Declares China Spy Scandal ‘Closed’ As FBI Moves To Revisit Case

California Rep. Eric Swalwell insisted Monday that questions surrounding his past ties to a suspected Chinese operative are settled, even as FBI leadership signals renewed interest in the case.

Speaking outside the Phillip Burton Federal Building in San Francisco, Swalwell dismissed the controversy outright, saying federal authorities resolved the matter years ago and found no wrongdoing on his part. He maintained that the issue had already been thoroughly reviewed and should no longer be a topic of debate.

The renewed attention comes as FBI Director Kash Patel is reportedly pushing to release files tied to the investigation involving Christine Fang, also known as Fang Fang. The case centers on Fang’s efforts to build relationships with rising political figures, including Swalwell, during his early career in local government.

Fang reportedly engaged with Swalwell at public events, helped raise campaign funds, and recommended individuals for internships in his office. She later left the United States in 2015 as scrutiny over her activities increased.

Federal investigators previously reviewed the situation and did not charge Swalwell with any crimes, a point he emphasized in his remarks. Still, the prospect of releasing additional investigative material has revived political pressure as he positions himself in California’s gubernatorial race.

Swalwell sharply criticized Patel, accusing him of abusing his authority and attempting to influence the political landscape. He framed the renewed scrutiny as part of a broader effort by Trump-aligned officials to interfere in elections and target political opponents.

President Donald Trump’s allies have defended the effort to revisit the case, arguing that the public deserves transparency regarding any potential foreign influence involving elected officials.

The controversy has lingered over Swalwell since it first came to light while he served on the House Intelligence Committee. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy previously pushed for additional scrutiny, including an ethics review.

Swalwell has continued to brush off the allegations in recent appearances, calling them politically motivated attacks. His campaign has also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on legal services in recent years, which aides say were necessary to navigate what they describe as ongoing retaliatory investigations.
