Tobias Myers Demoted to Minors as Brewers Shuffle Pitching Staff

The progression of Tobias Myers, a Milwaukee Brewers pitcher, has hit a rut, prompting his return to the minor leagues. This development follows an inability to replicate the triumphant debut season he experienced last year. The Brewers implemented changes to their team roster on Sunday; as a result, Myers is being demoted to Triple-A Nashville.

In turn, they’ve chosen right-handed pitcher Easton McGee from Triple-A to be part of the team. Adding to the shuffle, they’ve reassigned their left-handed pitcher, Connor Thomas, to the 60-day injury list. The recasting of these roles within the Brewers line-up is indicative of their desire to refine their team.

Presently, Myers possesses a record of 1-1 with a 4.95 ERA accumulated from six games, five of which he started. His latest game resulted in a disappointing 7-0 loss against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, where he gave up four runs in just over three innings.

His performance in the previous season was markedly better, as he charted a 9-6 record with a commendable 3.00 ERA. This impressive feat earned him the title of the Brewers’ most esteemed pitcher by the local Milwaukee Baseball Writers Association of America chapter.

A noteworthy moment in his career was his performance in the irrefutable Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series. Playing against the New York Mets, Myers pitched for five scoreless innings. Despite ultimately losing 4-2 by conceding four runs in the game’s ninth inning, his effort on the mound was spirited.

Pat Murphy, the Brewers’ manager, remains hopeful and admirative of Myers. Reflecting on his performance in Game 3, he expressed his belief in the pitcher’s potential: ‘I hold great respect for the young man. His capacity to perform, as evidenced in Game 3, exists within him. Our task is to rekindle this aptitude.’

Myers was briefly sent to Nashville earlier, but a shoulder injury to left-hander José Quintana warranted his swift return to the majors before he had a chance to pitch at the lower level. Following this brief stint back in the big leagues, he is heading back to Nashville once again.

Prior to his last game, Myers had an unwanted record of granting 10 walks during his 16 1/3 innings on the mound. However, he turned a new leaf on Saturday with no walks, but this had an unfortunate side effect – he allowed a career-high 11 hits.

Speaking after the match, Myers reflected on his flawed strategy: ‘My intent was to consistently land pitches within the strike zone to avoid the walks that have plagued me recently. I believe I overcompensated a bit too much, hence the too many hits.’

On the other hand, the newly-inducted McGee carries a record of 1-0 with an ERA of 3.44. Amassed over a 18 1/3 innings in his 13 relief stints with Nashville, he has made 20 strikeouts which is a positive sign for the Brewers.

McGee has had two distinct opportunities to pitch at the big league level. He made his debut back in 2022 for Tampa Bay, then pitched for Seattle in 2023. His big-league experience, albeit limited, will be valuable to the Brewers.

From his two performances in the majors, McGee allowed only one unearned run across a total of 9 2/3 innings. Accompanied with three strikeouts and only five hits and a single walk, his promising track record offers a beacon of hope for his stint with the Brewers.
