Trump DOJ Deliberates Over Gun Ban For Transgenders
The Trump administration’s Department of Justice is deliberating whether to block transgender-identifying individuals from purchasing firearms in the wake of a deadly church shooting in Minneapolis, allegedly carried out by a person identifying as transgender.
Sources inside the DOJ told The Daily Wire that senior officials are exploring legal frameworks to classify gender dysphoria—a mental health condition characterized by severe discomfort with one’s biological sex—as grounds for disqualification from gun ownership.
DOJ Eyes Mental Health Grounds
“Individuals within the DOJ are reviewing ways to ensure that mentally ill individuals suffering from gender dysphoria are unable to obtain firearms while they are unstable and unwell,” a senior official shared.
Although the Department has not confirmed specific policies under review, a spokesperson said Attorney General Pam Bondi is actively considering “a range of options” to stop violent incidents before they happen—especially in schools.
Mounting Concern After Trans-Linked Massacres
Last week’s shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church, where transgender-identifying suspect Robin Westman allegedly gunned down two children and injured several more, has intensified scrutiny over a disturbing pattern.
The attack closely mirrors the 2023 shooting at Covenant Christian School in Nashville, where another trans-identifying individual killed six, including three children.
A growing chorus of Republican lawmakers, law enforcement veterans, and victims’ rights advocates are calling for an investigation into what they describe as a rise in ideologically motivated violence tied to gender dysphoria.
White House & DHS Target Trans-Related Domestic Terrorism
According to sources who spoke with The Daily Wire, President Trump’s upcoming national security framework will address the issue of transgender-related domestic violence directly for the first time.
“What we should do is look at the early warning signals,” said Sebastian Gorka, Trump’s former deputy assistant and now senior counterterrorism adviser. “It’s not about sexual proclivities — it’s about very visible patterns of behavior that no one is addressing until tragedy strikes.”
Minnesota’s ‘Trans Refuge’ Laws Under Scrutiny
The shooting has reignited debate over Minnesota’s “trans refuge” laws, signed by Governor Tim Walz in 2023, which made the state a safe haven for minors seeking transgender procedures. Walz, who declined additional school security funding last year, is now calling for a special legislative session on gun violence.
But critics say he’s missing the bigger picture.
“Democrats have called for common sense gun laws for a long time,” said one DOJ official. “This seems pretty common sense to me.”
Civil Liberties Clash
The proposal being discussed within DOJ would categorize gender dysphoria under existing definitions of disqualifying mental illness in firearm background checks—a move sure to draw legal challenges from transgender advocacy groups and civil libertarians.
Supporters argue it is a necessary step to protect children and the public, pointing to a series of violent acts carried out by transgender-identifying individuals over the past decade. Critics claim the measure is discriminatory and conflates mental illness with identity.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey blasted the idea, accusing Republicans of politicizing a tragedy and directing “HATE” toward the transgender community.
Meanwhile, survivors and advocates for child safety are demanding urgent action, not political correctness.
“We’re not trying to stigmatize anyone,” one parent told local media. “We’re trying to stop the next shooting.”
Whether the DOJ moves forward remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: President Trump’s administration is signaling it will take a dramatically different approach to both gun violence and gender ideology than previous administrations.
