Trump Predicts Schumer Will Fold In DHS Shutdown Fight, Floats Ending Filibuster

President Donald Trump predicted that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will eventually cave in the ongoing Department of Homeland Security funding standoff, while again urging Republicans to eliminate the filibuster.

In a Truth Social post, Trump called Schumer “desperate” and argued that Democrats would be forced to strike a deal to reopen DHS or risk Republicans moving to end the 60-vote threshold.

“Chuck Schumer… will make a deal now because he thinks that if he doesn’t, Republicans will TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER,” Trump wrote, adding that the GOP should consider scrapping it regardless.

The shutdown, now stretching beyond a month, has been driven by a deadlock over immigration policy. Senate Democrats have used the filibuster to block Republican-backed efforts to fully fund DHS, pushing instead for reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Those demands include changes such as requiring officers to display identification, expanding the use of body cameras, and implementing new limits on enforcement practices.

Republicans, led by Senate Majority Leader John Thune, have argued that Democrats are shifting their demands and preventing a workable compromise. Thune said negotiations have repeatedly stalled after apparent progress.

At one point, GOP negotiators considered a partial funding approach that would exclude certain ICE operations, with plans to address those later through reconciliation, a process that bypasses the filibuster. However, talks collapsed after Democrats reiterated conditions Republicans consider unacceptable.

Democratic aides have pushed back, saying their proposals reflect longstanding priorities and noting that some reforms have already been discussed with the White House.

Meanwhile, the impact of the shutdown is intensifying nationwide. Workers at the Transportation Security Administration are set to miss another paycheck, with hundreds of screeners quitting and absentee rates climbing.

Airports across the country have reported severe delays, with security lines stretching for hours in some locations as staffing shortages worsen.

Despite Trump’s calls to eliminate the filibuster, Republican leadership has signaled hesitation, citing concerns about how such a move could backfire if Democrats regain control of the Senate in the future.

With negotiations stalled and pressure mounting, the standoff shows no clear resolution, even as both sides dig in over immigration policy and federal funding priorities.
