Trump: Schumer Is A ‘Loser’ Using The Shutdown In A Bid To ‘Get Relevance Back’
President Donald Trump slammed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday, accusing him of engineering the ongoing government shutdown to boost his political relevance.
“This is a Democrat Schumer shutdown, and he’s trying to do it to get relevance back into the party because he’s a loser,” Trump said during an Oval Office press conference.
The president, who noted he has known Schumer “all his life,” didn’t mince words. “He’s always been sort of a loser — but an intelligent one. I think he’s losing IQ points with time,” Trump remarked.
The government shutdown entered its 15th day on Wednesday with no end in sight. Senate Democrats again blocked a House-passed continuing resolution to reopen the government, voting 51-44. The resolution fell short of the 60-vote threshold needed to move forward. Senate Majority Whip John Thune said Republicans may attempt another vote on Thursday.
Trump said he hopes Democrats come to their senses, but suggested their delay might be tied to outside political events — namely, a planned left-wing protest this Saturday.
A series of demonstrations dubbed the “No Kings” protests are scheduled across the country this weekend. Organizers describe the movement as a “peaceful national day of action and mass mobilization in response to the increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption of the Trump administration.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson believes Democrats are holding the shutdown hostage to placate their far-left base ahead of the protests.
“They have a Hate America rally scheduled for Oct. 18 on the National Mall. It’s all the Pro-Hamas wing, the Antifa people, they’re all coming out,” Johnson told Fox News. “It’s being told to us that they won’t be able to reopen the government until after that rally because they can’t face their rabid base.”
With tempers flaring and no clear resolution in sight, Trump signaled he’s prepared to let Democrats take the heat.
“Let’s see who the American people blame when the dust settles,” he said. “I have a feeling they already know.”
