Trump Signs Executive Order Targeting Mail-In Voting, Sets Up Major Election Fight

President Donald Trump signed a sweeping executive order aimed at tightening controls on mail-in voting, a move that could significantly change how absentee ballots are distributed and verified ahead of upcoming federal elections.

The order directs the federal government to take a more active role in confirming voter eligibility, requiring the Department of Homeland Security to compile a list of eligible American voters. That data would then be shared with state election officials to ensure ballots are only sent to citizens legally allowed to vote.

Under the plan, the United States Postal Service would also play a larger role, ensuring absentee ballots are delivered only to individuals verified on the federal list. The order further mandates the use of trackable barcodes on ballot envelopes to improve oversight and accountability in the mail-in voting process.

Trump framed the action as a necessary step to protect election integrity, pointing to existing federal laws that prohibit non-citizens from voting in federal elections and impose penalties for violations.
