Trump Tells GOP: Use the ‘Trump Card’ and End the Filibuster to Stop Shutdown Madness
President Donald Trump is urging Senate Republicans to finally play hardball and end the government shutdown by invoking the “nuclear option” and scrapping the filibuster once and for all.
As the shutdown drags into its 31st day, just shy of the all-time record, Trump took to Truth Social to rally support for decisive action. While the House already passed a temporary funding bill, Senate Democrats continue to block it, hiding behind the 60-vote filibuster threshold.
Trump made it clear: Republicans hold the power — and it’s time to use it.
The 45th president praised House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune for their leadership, but said now is the moment to pull the trigger on the ultimate leverage play.
“It is now time for the Republicans to play their ‘TRUMP CARD,’ and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW,” Trump wrote.
He reminded Republicans that Democrats fought tooth and nail to end the filibuster when they were in power, blocked only by Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. And he warned that if Democrats ever take back the majority, they won’t hesitate for a second to kill the filibuster and ram through their radical agenda.
“Well, now WE are in power,” Trump declared, “and if we did what we should be doing, it would IMMEDIATELY end this ridiculous, Country destroying ‘SHUT DOWN.’”
Trump hammered the point that Democrats are “stone cold crazy” and warned that the only way to restore sanity and stability is to drop the procedural handcuffs and act.
“BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THE DEMOCRATS HAVE GONE STONE COLD ‘CRAZY,’ THE CHOICE IS CLEAR — INITIATE THE ‘NUCLEAR OPTION,’ GET RID OF THE FILIBUSTER AND, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The contrast couldn’t be more obvious. When Kamala Harris launched her failed presidential campaign, she openly called for scrapping the filibuster to push nationwide abortion laws. And while she had support from many in her party, even Joe Manchin resisted the power grab — at the time.
Now, with the government paralyzed and Democrats refusing to negotiate, Trump is demanding Republicans stop playing defense and use the tools at their disposal.
It’s time for the GOP to act like the majority and put the American people — not the Senate’s broken traditions — first.
