Trump Tells New Yorkers to Back Cuomo Over ‘Communist’ Mamdani: ‘You Really Have No Choice’

President Donald Trump is throwing his weight behind an unlikely figure in the New York City mayoral race — former Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo — urging voters to block what he calls the “communist takeover” of the city by current frontrunner Zohran Mamdani.

In a series of Truth Social posts, Trump blasted Mamdani as a radical with no record of success and warned that electing him would all but guarantee the economic and social collapse of America’s largest city.

“I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” Trump wrote. “He was nothing as an Assemblyman, ranked at the bottom of the class.”

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist and state Assemblyman from Queens, has led recent mayoral polls with 46.1% support, compared to Cuomo at 31.8% and Republican Curtis Sliwa at 16.3%, according to RealClearPolling.

Trump warned that if Mamdani were elected, his administration would withhold all but the bare minimum of federal funding to the city.

“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election… it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” Trump declared. “New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.”

Trump also had a warning for voters planning to back Curtis Sliwa, the Republican Guardian Angels founder, calling that support “a vote for Mamdani.”

“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” Trump added.

The president’s message marks a dramatic pivot, given his long and often hostile relationship with Cuomo. But Trump framed the choice as one of survival for a city he once called home.

“He won’t be getting any of it,” Trump said of Mamdani’s wish list of progressive policies. “So what’s the point of voting for him?”

With the election nearing, Trump’s stark warning is clear: “It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm.”
