Trump to Colombian President: Shut Down Drug Fields or Face U.S. Action
President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Sunday, accusing him of overseeing a massive surge in narcotics production and threatening to cut off U.S. aid unless immediate action is taken.
In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump called Petro “an illegal drug leader” who has allowed Colombia’s drug trade to flourish unchecked. He described Colombia’s narcotics operations as “killing fields” and warned that if Petro doesn’t shut them down, the United States will.
“President Gustavo Petro, of Colombia, is an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia,” Trump wrote. “It has become the biggest business in Colombia, by far, and Petro does nothing to stop it, despite large scale payments and subsidies from the USA that are nothing more than a long term rip off of America.”
Trump announced an immediate freeze on all U.S. payments to Colombia, stating: “AS OF TODAY, THESE PAYMENTS, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF PAYMENT, OR SUBSIDIES, WILL NO LONGER BE MADE TO COLOMBIA.”
He added a warning to Petro personally: “Petro, a low rated and very unpopular leader, with a fresh mouth toward America, better close up these killing fields immediately, or the United States will close them up for him, and it won’t be done nicely.”
The statement comes on the heels of a U.S. military strike on a drug-laden submarine traveling toward the United States. According to Trump, intelligence reports confirmed the vessel was loaded with fentanyl and other illegal narcotics. Two of the four narcoterrorists on board were killed in the strike, and the surviving pair — from Ecuador and Colombia — will be returned to their home countries for prosecution.
“At least 25,000 Americans would die if I allowed this submarine to come ashore,” Trump wrote. “Under my watch, the United States of America will not tolerate narcoterrorists trafficking illegal drugs, by land or by sea.”
The bold declarations signal a hardening of Trump’s already aggressive anti-narcotics stance, particularly targeting foreign governments he believes are complicit. The freeze on aid to Colombia could have wide-reaching implications for diplomatic and counter-narcotics cooperation, but Trump appears to be drawing a firm line in the sand.
As of now, the Petro government has not publicly responded to the threats.
