Trump Yanks Kamala’s Secret Service Detail After Biden’s Quiet Extension

President Donald Trump has officially ended Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, reversing a quiet extension granted by Joe Biden that exceeded the standard legal limit.

According to a letter dated Thursday and obtained by CNN, Harris’ protective detail will be terminated effective September 1, 2025. A senior White House official confirmed the decision Friday morning.

“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual… Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter to DHS reads.

Biden Gave Harris an 18-Month Extension

By law, former vice presidents receive six months of taxpayer-funded protection after leaving office. That protection would’ve ended on July 21. But Biden, before leaving office in January, signed an executive memo granting Harris an 18-month extension — tripling the standard duration.

The Trump administration reviewed that extension and decided it was no longer justified.

Harris, Newsom Allies Slam Decision

A spokesperson for Harris, Kirsten Allen, issued a polite statement:

“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

But not everyone took it so calmly. California Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the cancellation, and his spokesman Bob Salladay fumed:

“The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”

Harris Set for Book Tour Without Protection

The decision comes just weeks ahead of Harris’ planned national book tour for “107 Days” — a memoir about her failed 2024 presidential run. It is unclear whether she will now rely on private security.

Trump has made similar moves before. Earlier this year, he ended Secret Service protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden, citing bloated protection details and wasteful spending.

“Hunter Biden has had Secret Service protection for an extended period of time… There are as many as 18 people on this Detail, which is ridiculous!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Likewise, Ashley Biden who has 13 agents will be taken off the list.”

Trump also stripped protection from former officials including John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, and Brian Hook.

A Shift in Federal Priorities

The move reflects Trump’s broader effort to rein in the perks and privileges granted to former officials — especially those aligned with the previous administration. While critics claim the decision is “vindictive,” Trump allies argue it’s a matter of principle and taxpayer fairness.

More changes to post-administration benefits may be coming as Trump continues to overhaul policies tied to what his team has called the “Biden-era excess.”
