Starmer’s speech set out the UK’s stance on the issue while acknowledging the massacre that Hamas had inflicted on Israel in October 2023. But he then turned a focus to the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. The prime minister announced that the UK would recognise the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly, unless the Israeli government took practical steps to end the dire situation in Gaza.

The Prime Minister stipulated that, for this recognition to be prevented, Israel would need to agree to a ceasefire and demonstrate commitment to a lasting peace, including the revival of a Two-State Solution. Critics have argued that Mahmood’s viewpoints were likely instrumental in the formation of these new policies, her influence deemed particularly strong.

From a conservative viewpoint, Starmer’s choice of Mahmood for Home Secretary comes at a challenging time, given an ongoing migrant crisis. Critics argue that the move appears poorly thought-out, possibly threatening national security and public faith in the government.
