The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) recently unveiled the recipients of the revered Health Plan Champions Cup for Class AAAA. This sought-after award identifies premier high schools showcasing outstanding prowess in academics and sports. Morgantown High School bagged the accolade for girls’ sporting events, while Wheeling Park High School walked off with the trophy for boys’ athletic excellence.
The Health Plan Champions Cup is a coveted honor that celebrates the top boys’ and girls’ sports programs across the four categories of the WVSSAC. The evaluation process takes into consideration a range of athletic disciplines, conferring points related to success in statewide championship activities. Points are also associated with the attainment rate of the high school diploma from the preceding academic year.
Topping the charts for Class AAAA girls, Morgantown accumulated a significant 880 points. They managed to garner points from eight out of the nine regulated sporting activities throughout the educational year. The school’s laudable triumph in track and field was undoubtedly a major highlight.
Morgantown High School exhibited stellar performance in sports, concluding as the second-place runner-up in volleyball, basketball, and tennis. The institution clinched a proud third place in cross country and made it to the semi-finals at the state level in soccer. Remarkably, they bagged the fifth spot in swimming, and fought their way to the regional final in the softball competition.
Securing the second position with a commendable 678 points was University High School, popularly known as the Hawks. The institution proudly clinched the championship in cross-country racing. They also came in third in softball, secured the fourth spot in track and field, and landed seventh place in the cheerleading competition.
Complementing their powerful performance, the Hawks also reached regional finals in basketball and volleyball, contributing significantly to their overall score. Cabell Midland High School’s splendid victory in softball catapulted them to a third-place finish, amassing a respectable 584 points overall.
Washington High School, heralded as the soccer champions, accrued 568 points, finishing in fourth place within the stringent Class AAAA girl’s competition. On the boys’ side, Wheeling Park High School claimed the Class AAAA title.
With a diversified sports portfolio, Wheeling Park garnered a substantial score of 853 points, competing in more sports disciplines than any other educational institution in the Class AAAA category. Among the myriad of achievements, Wheeling Park managed to reach the State semi-finals in soccer, secured a stellar fifth place in the cross country race, and achieved commendable sixth-place positions in both wrestling and golf.
In addition to these notable achievements, Wheeling Park successfully advanced to the regional finals in both tennis and baseball. They also reached the quarterfinals in football, and secured an eighth spot in swimming. Garnering a significant total of 853 points, Wheeling Park showcased a remarkable display of an exemplary balance between diverse sports.
Close on their heels came Hurricane High School with an impressive 788.5 points, securing second place. Exhibiting their sporting prowess, the Redskins attained state championships in tennis and baseball, while achieving commendable runner-up positions in golf, soccer, and track, completing an all-around performance throughout the year.
Furthermore, Hurricane High School secured seventh place in cross-country races and successfully advanced to the second round of the football playoffs. With a remarkable tally of 769.5 points, Morgantown High School clinched the third place, earning plaudits for their fair play and consistent performance.
Shining in a variety of sports, Morgantown was a proud runner-up in baseball, made it to the semi-finals in basketball, and managed to secure the fourth place in cross-country races. University High School, demonstrating an impressive performance once again, won the state championships in three disciplines – cross-country, wrestling, and track, to secure fourth place, accumulating 687 points overall.
In a closely-fought contest, George Washington High School rounded up the top five of this prestigious competition with a commendable total of 680.5 points. The WVSSAC Health Plan Champions Cup celebrated the symbiotic relationship between sports and academics, showcasing the champions who not only excel in their chosen sports but also emphasize the importance of academics.
