Trump Slams NYC Mayor Mamdani Over Tax Push, Warns City ‘Will Only Get Worse’

President Donald Trump tore into New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of “destroying” the city through aggressive tax policies and warning that conditions will continue to deteriorate if the approach doesn’t change.

“Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance!” Trump wrote in a post, criticizing what he described as excessive taxation. He argued that the city’s policies are driving residents away and insisted the federal government should not support what he framed as a failing system.

Trump specifically targeted proposals aimed at increasing taxes on high earners and property owners, claiming “TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG” and warning that “people are fleeing.” He added that city leadership “must change their ways, AND FAST,” asserting that history shows such policies do not work.

The criticism follows a new proposal from Kathy Hochul to add a tax on second homes in New York City valued at $5 million or more. The measure is expected to affect around 13,000 properties and could generate up to $500 million annually as city leaders look to address a multibillion-dollar budget gap.

Mamdani has been pushing for broader tax increases as part of efforts to secure additional funding from the state, including higher levies on corporations and individuals earning $1 million or more. He has also floated the possibility of a significant property tax increase if state support does not materialize.

According to the administration’s plans, the combined tax measures could raise tens of billions of dollars, though critics argue the burden could extend beyond the wealthiest residents despite campaign promises to focus primarily on high-income earners.

The clash highlights growing tensions between federal and local leadership over economic policy, taxation, and the direction of one of the nation’s largest cities.
