AOC Says She May Leave Public Office Entirely if She Loses in 2028

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says a defeat in the 2028 election could bring her political career to an end, describing her future in public office as an “all or nothing” decision as speculation continues about whether she will seek the presidency, the Senate or another term in the House.

The New York Democrat made the comments during an interview published Tuesday while discussing her political future. Ocasio-Cortez said she has considered what losing a future race would mean and suggested she would not simply seek another office after a defeat.

“If I lose, I’m done,” Ocasio-Cortez said, adding that she would not continue running for office repeatedly. She described the possibility of seeking higher office as a major personal decision rather than simply the next step in a conventional political career.

Ocasio-Cortez has not announced what office, if any, she intends to seek in 2028. Her options could include running for reelection to the House, challenging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for his New York Senate seat or launching a presidential campaign.

Asked specifically whether she could challenge Schumer, Ocasio-Cortez declined to rule it out. She said her eventual decision would not be based on political “deference” and indicated that she would address the question when the time comes.

The possibility of a presidential campaign has also attracted attention. Ocasio-Cortez has said she plans to make decisions about 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections, while continuing to campaign for Democratic candidates around the country.

Her comments come as Democrats begin looking ahead to a potentially crowded 2028 presidential field. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and several other prominent Democrats have been discussed alongside Ocasio-Cortez as possible candidates, though none has secured the nomination and several have not announced campaigns.

Ocasio-Cortez has built a national political profile since first winning her House seat in 2018. She has become a prominent progressive voice in Congress and expanded her national visibility through appearances with Sen. Bernie Sanders and campaigning for progressive candidates.

Her fundraising operation has also grown substantially. The Guardian reported that Ocasio-Cortez has raised more than $32 million since 2025 and had more than $15 million available as of June 2026, resources that could potentially support a future statewide or national campaign.

For now, Ocasio-Cortez says she has not made a final decision about 2028. But her latest comments indicate that if she does pursue another office and loses, she currently views that defeat as potentially marking the end of her time as an elected official.
