Washington, D.C. — Speaker Mike Johnson has driven President Donald Trump’s signature “One Big, Beautiful Bill” to the brink of final passage following an all-night scramble on the House floor.

GOP Narrowly Clears Key Hurdle

At 3:30 a.m., Republicans eked out a 219-213 vote to advance the bill, overcoming five initial GOP defections. The drama forced Johnson to leave the vote open for hours while he, aided by President Trump, personally lobbied holdouts. The most prominent flip came from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who switched from “no” to “yes” after late-night talks with leadership.

Trump’s midnight prod:
“Largest Tax Cuts in History and a Booming Economy vs. Biggest Tax Increase in History, and a Failed Economy,” the president posted on Truth Social as the tally stalled. “What are Republicans waiting for??? MAGA IS NOT HAPPY.”

Democrats Run Out the Clock — But Can’t Block a Vote

Immediately after the rule passed, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) seized the floor and launched a marathon speech heavy on testimonials from Medicaid recipients and other social-welfare beneficiaries. Under House rules he can delay— but not prevent — the final vote. By mid-morning, Jeffries was still speaking, signaling his intent to stretch proceedings but with no power to derail them.

What’s in the Bill

  • Permanent Trump tax cuts set to replace expiring 2017 provisions.

  • Border & military surge funding fulfilling core 2024 campaign promises.

  • Massive deregulatory slate aimed at energy, infrastructure, and small business.

  • Debt-ceiling lift that critics say swells red ink but that supporters insist will be swamped by explosive growth.

Trump touts the package as an economic rocket booster: “Trillions of dollars are now being invested into the USA … We are growing our way out of the Sleepy Joe Biden mess.”

Next Steps

Once Jeffries yields, the House will move to a final up-or-down vote. Johnson says he still expects to hit Trump’s Independence Day deadline, predicting passage “a full day early.” If the bill clears the House unchanged, it heads straight to the White House for the president’s signature, capping a bruising but ultimately successful GOP push to deliver the centerpiece of Trump’s second-term agenda.
