Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted For Lying To Congress: ‘No One Is Above The Law’

Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury on charges of making false statements and obstructing a congressional proceeding — a stunning turn in the long saga of Russiagate.

Comey, 64, is the highest-ranking former federal official to face criminal charges connected to the FBI’s Trump-Russia probe. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

President Trump celebrated the indictment, blasting Comey as “one of the worst human beings this Country has ever been exposed to.” In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote: “JUSTICE IN AMERICA! … He has been so bad for our Country, for so long, and is now at the beginning of being held responsible for his crimes against our Nation. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Attorney General Pam Bondi called the indictment proof that “no one is above the law.” Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, added: “The charges represent a breach of the public trust at an extraordinary level.”

The case hinges on Comey’s September 30, 2020, testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, when he denied authorizing leaks to the media about both the Trump investigation and the Clinton email probe. Prosecutors allege he lied under oath, noting that then-Deputy Director Andrew McCabe had publicly stated Comey approved leaks to the Wall Street Journal.

The indictment charges that Comey’s denials amounted to obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Trump, speaking in the Oval Office earlier Thursday, insisted he had not pressured prosecutors: “They’re going to make a determination. I’m not making that determination … I think I’d be allowed to get involved if I want, but I don’t really choose to do so.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said the move was a major step toward restoring trust after years of politicization under Comey. “Nowhere was this more blatant than during the Russiagate hoax, a disgraceful chapter in history,” Patel said. “Everyone, especially those in positions of power, will be held to account.”

Comey, fired by Trump in 2017, has been an outspoken critic of the president ever since. He was behind the FBI’s “Crossfire Hurricane” probe that fueled years of claims about Trump-Russia collusion — claims that collapsed under scrutiny.

The indictment dropped just days before the statute of limitations expired. For Trump and his supporters, it’s a long-awaited reckoning.
