DOJ and Congress Investigating Ilhan Omar Over Ballooning Net Worth, Trump Confirms
President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that Rep. Ilhan Omar is under investigation by both the Department of Justice and Congress following growing scrutiny over her rapidly expanding net worth and the financial dealings of her husband, Tim Mynett.
The announcement comes just days after House Republicans revealed plans to examine the Minnesota Democrat’s finances. Trump, who has long accused Omar of corruption, said the probe is expanding alongside a broader federal investigation into welfare fraud and money laundering in the state of Minnesota.
“Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, is now reportedly worth more than 44 million dollars,” Trump wrote. “Time will tell all.”
The Justice Department’s involvement comes as Trump dispatched immigration czar Tom Homan to Minnesota to address rising unrest following the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by a federal immigration officer. The state, Trump said, is “collapsing under the weight of fraud, corruption, and lawlessness.”
Omar responded with a defiant post on X, accusing Trump of deflection.
“Right on cue, you’re deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories about me,” she wrote. “Years of ‘investigations’ have found nothing. Get your goons out of Minnesota.”
But House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer isn’t backing down. Comer told reporters his panel is considering a subpoena for both Omar and Mynett, whose financial disclosures show a dramatic and unexplained spike in asset value.
According to court records, Mynett’s firm, Rose Lake Capital, reported having just $42.44 in the bank as of 2022. But Omar’s 2024 House financial disclosure listed the firm’s value as high as $25 million.
Omar did not disclose personal ownership in the company, but congressional rules require disclosure of spousal assets. Additional documents tied to Mynett’s ventures — including a failed winery and marijuana business — place the couple’s net worth somewhere between $6 million and $30 million.
“That’s a massive jump in a very short time,” Comer said. “Somebody’s going to find out. It’s either going to be my committee or the Ethics Committee.”
The explosive growth in wealth has drawn red flags across Capitol Hill. Omar’s political rise has long been dogged by ethics questions, from campaign finance issues to alleged misuse of funds. Her marriage to Mynett, who previously worked as her political consultant, also raised conflict of interest concerns.
A spokesman for Rose Lake Capital claims Mynett earned under $20,000 in 2024. But financial records suggest otherwise, and investigators want answers.
Omar’s background is well known. Her family fled Somalia in the 1990s, lived in a refugee camp in Kenya, and eventually resettled in Virginia before moving to Minneapolis in 1997. She became a U.S. citizen in 2000 and was elected to Congress in 2018.
But her story may now face its most serious test as investigators dig into the millions she and her husband have quietly accumulated.
