Elon Musk Offers To Pay TSA Salaries As DHS Shutdown Drags On

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has offered to personally cover the salaries of Transportation Security Administration workers as the Department of Homeland Security shutdown stretches into its second month.

“I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country,” Musk wrote Saturday on X.

The offer comes as tens of thousands of TSA officers continue working without pay due to the ongoing funding stalemate in Congress.

While most of the federal government remains funded, DHS has been left out of a broader agreement, triggering disruptions across the nation’s airports.

The impact is becoming increasingly visible.

At major airports including Atlanta, Houston, and Philadelphia, security wait times have surged, in some cases exceeding three hours as staffing shortages worsen.

According to available data, Houston has seen some of the longest average delays, followed by Atlanta and New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

Behind the scenes, TSA workers are facing mounting financial strain.

Roughly 50,000 employees are now approaching a second missed paycheck, with many still recovering from a previous shutdown just months earlier.

Union officials say some officers are taking on gig work, turning to food banks, or even sleeping in their cars to make ends meet.

Airports have begun implementing emergency measures, including distributing free meals, gas cards, and setting up on-site food pantries to support workers.

Despite the hardships, TSA employees are still required to report to work or risk disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, the political standoff in Washington remains unresolved.

Republicans have pushed to fund individual components of DHS, while Democrats have resisted partial funding without broader immigration policy changes.

The deadlock has left TSA in limbo, even as other agencies like ICE and Customs and Border Protection continue normal operations.

Musk’s proposal, while drawing attention, raises significant legal and logistical questions.

Federal employee pay is controlled by Congress, and it remains unclear whether a private individual could legally step in to cover government salaries.

Even so, the offer highlights the severity of the situation.

With staffing shortages growing, delays worsening, and no agreement in sight, the shutdown is increasingly straining both airport operations and the federal workforce tasked with keeping travelers safe.
